Tauranga City Council are at an exciting time in their Digital Network and Security strategy with this brand new role now available.


As the Lead Network and Security Specialist your primary purpose is to provide specialist technical leadership, strategic guidance and advice to the organisation across security and network disciplines including planning, architecture, and design, and leading the execution of technical solutions.


The key outcomes for this position are as follows:

  • Providing effective team leadership

Ngā Pukenga | What you'll need to succeed


As the primary technical subject matter expert for our Security and Network functions we are looking for the following skills:

  • Work with other digital functions and delivery teams to provide technical guidance and optimal solution design through to successful delivery
  • Lead and oversee the Council's Network and Security initiatives, ensuring projects align with the organisation's objectives to deliver business outcomes
  • Take a proactive stance in identifying potential security threats and vulnerabilities, developing and implementing preventive measures to enhance the Councils Cyber Security readiness
  • Lead the creation of architecture principles and standards to guide solution decisions for the enterprise that optimise the use of Council technology
  • Strong strategic thinking and planning skills, with the ability to develop and execute inline with the Councils goals
  • Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python and Bash, and automation tools for network configuration management.
  • Work closely with the Connectivity and Defence Platform manager to support and deliver the long-term strategic roadmap for Cyber Security at the Council
  • Mentor Junior Security Analysts and Network Engineers
  • In-depth knowledge of routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, MPLS), switching technologies (VLANs, QoS, ACLs), and network infrastructure design.
  • Expertise in understanding of firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), VPNs, and secure network design principles.
  • Strong analytical skills to diagnose and resolve complex Network problems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex Network and Security concepts to a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Knowledge of cloud networking concepts like SDN, cloud-based network services, and hybrid cloud deployments
  • Expertise in troubleshooting network issues, analysing network performance using monitoring tools, and capacity planning for future growth.
  • Experience with the following platforms:
  • Palo Alto (Cortex XDR and Firewalls)
  • Qualys
  • Mimecast
  • Switching Xtreme, Aruba and Juniper
  • Cisco Meraki
  • Microsoft Azure and AWS
  • Microsoft Security Platforms and Services
