Job Description - Policy Writer

  • Fixed term for four months; 0.5FTE with options to work from home
  • Create, review and revise fit for purpose organisational policies
  • Modern, open plan offices near the Wellington Railway Station

Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) is a New Zealand-based international development agency that engages Kiwi volunteers on long and short-term volunteer assignments overseas and online.  These assignments enable Kiwis to share their skills and knowledge with communities striving for sustainable change in the wider Pacific and beyond.

VSA is a member of the Council for International Development (CID), which is the national umbrella agency for New Zealand organisations working in international development. CID has a code of conduct, which is a voluntary, self-regulatory sector code of good practice that aims to improve international development outcomes and increase stakeholder trust by enhancing the transparency and accountability of signatory organisations. It serves both as a guide to good practice and as a risk management document.

Organisations show they are compliant with CID’s code of conduct through the completion of a compliance self-assessment process every three years. As part of VSA’s preparation for their next assessment in November, they need a Policy Writer to work closely with subject matter experts across the organisation (particularly finance) to draft, cross-reference and refine policy, before running robust consultation processes and then socialising final policies across the organisation.

This is a fixed term position for four months. We are looking for someone to start the first week of July and commit to the full term of the contract.

Contracted hours are 0.5FTE (18.75 – 20 hours per week). There’s no preference as to which days are worked, however it is expected you will be based in the office at least two days per week. We are open to considering someone that doesn’t live in Wellington, but you must be able to commit to this time in the office.

We will be interviewing week commencing 24 June, so you must be available to interview that week.

Person Profile:

  • A proven track record of writing fit for purpose policies in a professional environment, preferably in finance
  • An understanding of corporate processes and finance
  • Excellent influencing, interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Excellent relationship management skills
  • Commitment to the principles of international development and understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and multi-culturalism
  • An appreciation of the Not for Profit operating environment and organisational culture
  • Strong results achievement focus, with professional standards and ability to organise and prioritise workloads effectively, to ensure high quality results within deadlines

The salary range for this role is $90,000 - $95,000 (full time equivalent) depending on skills and experience.
