The role

The role of the Development Engineer is to support the Development Engineering Manager with all development associated activities.

Here at Selwyn District Council, the Development Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the engineering components of all developments meet the appropriate construction standards. We do this by:

• Imposing engineering conditions on resource consents
• Approving all engineering design plans
• Managing the construction phase of developments and ensuring all vested asset installation meets expected standards
• Reviewing all engineering quality assurance documentation and issuing final acceptance of vested assets
• Monitoring during the defects liability period
• Approving the release of uncompleted works and maintenance bonds
• Approving all water connections associated with resource consents
• Regularly reviewing the Engineering Code of Practice
• Managing and growing strong working relationships with developers and contractors
• Communicating with customers

There is no such thing as a typical day in the life of a Council Development Engineer; some days are spent out in the field completing hold-point inspections or meetings, other days will be spent inside approving resource consent applications and engineering plans.

The key responsibility of this role is to ensure that works undertaken, and assets being vested, meet Councils expectations and the relevant legislation.

The Infrastructure & Property Group delivers the core services that rate payers expect. These include roading, water services, parks and reserves, solid waste, emergency management, and the management of property holdings.

The Development Engineering team sits within the Asset Management team and is part of the Infrastructure & Property Group. The Development Engineer will report directly to the Development Engineering Manager.

Selwyn is growing and developing at a rapid pace; therefore, we need skilled people to make it happen - that's why we are growing the Development Engineering team by another two roles!

The successful applicant should tick most, if not all, of the following:

• Experience with engineering designs and reports
• Experience with design/construction standards and specifications
• Experience with dealing with a variety of stakeholders (consultants, developers, customers, contractors)
• Design and/or construction experience
• Experience with document management and process documentation

Suitable applicants could be:

• Recent graduate
• Consultant looking for a change
• Semi-professional contractor (site engineer, surveyor) with engineering skills looking for the next challenge
• Someone who has been out of industry for an extended period but can demonstrate that they have the willingness upskill
