A8 is a unique ward accommodating both the Acute Stroke Unit and Vascular Surgery specialties. We are a passionate and dynamic team who support a diverse patient group, as well as each other.

Currently there are 24 inpatient ward beds, but we are expanding a total of 8 extra beds, opening in two stages. We are preparing to open now 4 beds in the fresh new progressive care unit (PCU) which will provide intermediate level nursing for both stroke and vascular patients as they step down from ICU or to support higher acuity needs at a 1:2 nursing ratio.

We have a wide range of complex patient presentations which includes acute and elective, medical and surgical, local and wider South Island.

You will be well supported by the senior nursing team which comprises of a Charge Nurse Manager, Nurse Educator, Stroke Clinical Nurse Specialist and a Vascular Clinical Nurse Specialist.

We are looking for energetic nurses who are eager to strengthen and develop their skills in these specialty areas and be a part of this exciting time of expansion, working on the ward with the best views across Christchurch in Waipapa.

  • Advanced critical thinking with exceptional patient assessment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Previous surgical experience preferred however experience working in other acute specialties will be considered. 
  • Experience in wound management and high acuity nursing desirable
