At Freightways, we're building a practical AI enablement capability across our Group.
This isn't a back-office role. You'll be out on the frontier with real subject matter experts across our business units, across New Zealand and Australia, helping them turn AI ideas into working solutions – then handing over the reins so they can keep driving it themselves. You'll run office hours, coach executives, build prototypes, and make sure nobody has to reinvent the wheel because you've pointed them at the pattern, template or person who already solved it.
What you'll be doing
- Embedding with business units to help break the back of practical AI adoption problems – then stepping back so they can own it.
- Running regular exec AI advisory sessions - Q&A, support and ideas.
- Delivering AI training across the business.
- Keeping across the fast-moving world of ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and beyond – and keeping our training and guidance current.
- Promoting reusable patterns and tooling (like our pre-built security and privacy templates) so teams move fast without cutting corners.
- Being the conduit back to the centre – spotting the gaps in our documentation, FAQs and registers before they become a problem.
- Helping the business experiment boldly but safely and knowing exactly who to call when governance or security expertise is needed.
What we're looking for
- 2–3 years' experience as a software engineer or developer, with an emerging architect's mindset.
- Genuine curiosity about AI and a real appetite for continuous learning – you're probably already playing with these tools in your own time.
- Excellent communication skills and the confidence to work directly with subject matter experts and executives.
- Good judgement about when AI should be used, not just when it can be.
- A preference for being out the front with people, not just heads-down coding.
Why this role
This is a bit of a unicorn role, and we know it. You'll have real air cover from our Group Data & AI Architect and the wider architecture team, who help break the back of the hardest problems – your job is to carry that out to the business and bring the learning back. As Freightways moves further into agentic AI, this role – and the person in it – will only grow.
