Under the supervisor of Gossett Student-Athlete Center's Learning Support Services, the Assistant Learning Specialist will be responsible for providing comprehensive educational support to a designated caseload of at-risk student-athletes through learning strategy enhancement and academic skill development.
Primary Job Duties: - Conduct daily learning support sessions with a designated caseload of at-risk students to help develop academic skills including time management, reading comprehension, study skills, writing, etc.
- Monitor the academic progress of assigned student-athletes on a day-to-day basis in collaboration with the Athletic Academic Counselor and Learning Specialist
- Maintain and file confidential reports and evaluations of student-athletes' academic progress
- Assist with the administration and interpretation of various academic testing and screening protocols (e.g. Incoming Student Questionnaire, Nelson-Denny, LASSI).
- Assist in the referral process of student-athletes to the Maryland Office of Disability Services and assist with the process of obtaining and utilizing accommodations
- Responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operation of objective-based study hall including, but not limited to, oversight of evening/weekend study hall and tutorial services
- Attend and participate in Athletics All-Team and GSAC team meetings
- Participate in regularly scheduled trainings relevant to specific Learning Specialist and Athletic Academic Counselor responsibilities
- Adhere to the Family Educational Rights to Privacy Act (FERPA)
Other Essential Functions: - Must have strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail (specifically google suite, microsoft office & various university systems)
- Ability to set appropriate professional boundaries and serve as a professional supervisor, monitor and leader of a diverse student-athlete population during study hall and meetings/trainings
- Maintain a high level of cultural awareness and competency
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings and some weekends
- Maintain academic integrity at all times
- Ability to communicate effectively, professionally and accurately (oral and written)
Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
- Experience working with at-risk student-athlete populations within an academic setting
- Ability to work independently in a fast paced environment
- Desire to obtain full-time employment in the student-athlete academic support industry
- Ability to articulate an understanding of the needs of academically at-risk student-athletes
- Preference will be given to individuals who have completed a graduate assistantship position in an Athletic Academic Services department
