Assistant Underwriter

As an Assistant Underwriter, you will play a key role in supporting profitable growth across our SME commercial portfolio. Working closely with intermediaries, customers and internal stakeholders, you will assess risks, support renewal and new business opportunities and deliver underwriting solutions that provide exceptional customer outcomes while contributing to portfolio growth and performance.

What you'll do:

• Manage renewal and new business opportunities, providing tailored underwriting solutions that support retention and portfolio growth.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with intermediaries and business partners, delivering excellent service and customer outcomes.
• Support the achievement of growth, profitability and portfolio performance targets through effective risk assessment and decision-making.
• Collaborate with distribution, operations, claims and underwriting teams to deliver seamless customer and partner experiences.
• Manage digital referrals and contribute to initiatives that improve underwriting processes, system performance, and customer outcomes.
• Identify opportunities to support innovation, automation and continuous improvement across underwriting activities.
• Contribute to a strong risk and performance culture by adhering to underwriting guidelines, policies, and governance requirements.

What you'll bring:

• Experience in commercial underwriting, insurance or a related role within the general insurance industry.
• Strong understanding of commercial insurance products, underwriting principles and risk assessment practices.
• Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with brokers, intermediaries, customers and internal stakeholders.
• Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to balance commercial considerations and risk management requirements.
• Knowledge of the New Zealand commercial insurance market and SME sector.
• Relevant industry qualifications or tertiary qualifications are desirable.
