Business Development Manager – NZ (business events)

You are a seasoned Business Development Manager who can successfully attract AND secure business conferences, conventions and events for the Wellington region, including Tākina.

You are proud of your existing networks and connections within our NZ business events industry, exceptional sales results, events planning knowledge and genuine desire to work together for Wellington's future.

Please note: This is a fixed term contract opportunity for approximately 12 months, due to parental leave.

What you’ll do

Currently located at Te Papa, this role reports to the Business Events Wellington (BEW) Manager.

As our BEW Business Development Manager – New Zealand, you’ll be responsible for: 

  • Representing the BEW team to proactively promote Wellington as a business events destination to the New Zealand market.
  • Identifying, attracting and securing business conferences, conventions and events for Wellington, working with local partners.
  • Participating in tradeshow activities, famils and sales activities. 
  • Preparing presentations and bids as required, including bidding for conferences and contributing to the overall BEW business plan. 
  • Working closely with our BEW Team in Wellington and Australia.
  • Note you may be required to attend meetings or events outside of normal working hours and may require travel outside of our region. 

About you

  • Your superpower is business development! 
  • Specialising in selling Wellington as a destination and adapting to different clients and changing scenarios. You love finding solutions, getting the mahi done, and closing the sale!
  • Enjoy the mix of autonomous responsibilities while working within your own team and across the wider organisation.
  • Detail orientated, able to prioritise your own work and delegate when needed.
  • Resourceful, curious and great at finding leads.
  • Proven results in a business development role, within the business events, conference or hospitality sector. Ideally within New Zealand, or you have significant knowledge of our industry.
  • Exceptional communication skills, building rapport and fostering relationships with people from all walks of life, and levels of seniority.
  • Proactive and creative thinker, contributing to strategies to drive the sales pipeline.
  • Pride in your results, quality of work, customer centric and caring for your stakeholders, ensuring they receive the best experience.
