Job Description - Business Intelligence Analyst

Our client is on an exciting journey to harness the power of data and become an insights-driven organisation. They are leveraging Databricks on Azure as their modern data platform, rolling it out globally to all their business units. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between business needs and technical solutions, ensuring their data solutions are comprehensive, aligned with business processes, and meet their reporting and analytical requirements.

What you'll do:

As a Business Intelligence Analyst, you will be at the heart of our client's journey towards becoming an insights-driven organisation. You will gather business requirements, translate them into technical specifications, design dimensional data models, apply elements of dimensional modelling, understand complex SQL code, provide additional capacity for BI development when needed, assist with documentation of data processes and objects, and support effective data management. Your work will directly contribute to the successful rollout of their modern data platform across all business units.

  • Gather business requirements and translate them into comprehensive technical requirements for both technical and analytical teams, ensuring holistic data solutions that reflect our business processes.
  • Act as a liaison between business stakeholders and technical teams to ensure alignment and clarity in project objectives and deliverables.
  • Design and continually enhance the Dimensional Data Model based on a thorough understanding of our business processes and source data to support our data and reporting needs.
  • Apply key elements of dimensional modelling, including facts, dimensions, cardinality, star schemas, and snowflake schemas, while being aware of performance constraints to ensure the model efficiently supports Power BI reports.
  • Understand and review complex SQL code, assisting with the migration project from SQL Server and WhereScape to Databricks.
  • Provide additional capacity for BI development and report development as needed, stepping in to support these areas during peak times or when extra expertise is required.
  • Assist with documentation of data processes and objects.
  • Support effective data management and governance.


What you bring:

The ideal candidate for the Business Intelligence Analyst role brings a wealth of experience in data-focused business or technical analysis. You have strong SQL skills, with proficiency in complex querying and data modelling. Your expertise in building and enhancing dimensional models is complemented by your solid understanding of data architecture and data warehouse pipelines. You have proven experience designing and building reports and visualisations, particularly with Power BI. Your knowledge of the Microsoft BI stack and advanced Excel skills will be invaluable in this role. Your excellent stakeholder management skills enable you to effectively bridge the gap between technical teams and business stakeholders. You are proficient in gathering and documenting requirements, creating functional specifications, and conducting impact analysis. Above all, you are detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Proven experience as a Data-focused Business Analyst or Technical Analyst.
  • Strong experience in SQL with proficiency in complex querying and data modelling.
  • Expertise in building and enhancing dimensional models, including star schemas and snowflake schemas, with a solid understanding of data architecture and data warehouse pipelines.
  • Proven experience designing and building reports and visualizations, with a strong focus on Power BI (also including tools like Tableau, Qlik Sense, OLAP, and SSRS).
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft BI stack (SQL Server, SSRS, and SSIS).
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to bridge the gap between technical teams and business stakeholders.
  • Proficient in gathering and documenting requirements, creating functional specifications, and conducting impact analysis.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
