Job Description - Care and Support Worker - Kaiawhina

Te Whariki Whakaruruhau is the Te Roopu Taurima model of service that recognises the intrinsic value and relationship of Tangata (Care recipient), their whanau (Family) and kaimahi (Staff). As a kaupapa Maori service we strive to make a difference in the lives of Tangata by surrounding them with a caring environment based on Maori values of respect and whanau. The service appeals to a wide range of people of different ethnicities because of Te Roopu Taurima’s philosophy of accepting and valuing all cultural practices.




About the Role
As a Kaiawhina, you will play a vital role in empowering and supporting tāngata to lead fulfilling lives within their communities. Your role involves providing daily care, supporting personal development, and ensuring a culturally safe environment that embraces tikanga Māori. You’ll contribute to wellness, lifestyle, and organisational development by delivering high-quality care in alignment with our kaupapa Māori approach.


Key Responsibilities



Cultural & Holistic Support



  • Provide care aligned with tikanga Māori and Te Reo Māori principles

  • Foster a culturally safe, supportive environment for tāngata


Wellness & Lifestyle Development



  • Implement care and rehabilitation plans tailored to individual needs

  • Administer medication safely and according to protocols

  • Support tāngata in developing life skills and reaching personal goals


Service & Quality Improvement



  • Assist in implementing service plans aligned with organisational objectives

  • Conduct monthly audits and provide constructive feedback

  • Promote a positive, socially engaging atmosphere within the whare


Resource & Household Management



  • Support household hygiene, maintenance, and daily routines

  • Assist with vehicle care, transport records, and inventory management

  • Provide personal care, including bathing, dressing, toileting, and meal preparation


Health & Safety Compliance



  • Follow all health and safety policies and legislative requirements

  • Report incidents, hazards, and near misses in a timely manner

  • Contribute to a strong health and safety culture


Professional Development & Teamwork



  • Collaborate with team members to enhance service delivery

  • Represent the organisation positively and uphold its values




About You



Skills & Experience



  • Experience in caregiving or support roles, ideally within disability or health sectors

  • Compassionate, resilient, and solution-focused approach

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Experience supporting tāngata with high and complex needs is advantageous


Qualifications & Requirements



  • NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 2 or higher), or equivalent (preferred)

  • Full, clean NZ driver’s licence, with ability to drive manual vehicles

  • Physically fit and capable of undertaking an active, hands-on role

  • Availability to work rotating rosters, including weekends and public holidays

  • Clear Ministry of Justice background check
