Job Description - Clinical Director

The role:
The Clinical Director is responsible for setting, leading, and developing the organisation's clinical and strategic direction. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Clinical Director will form part of the Executive Leadership team. The role entails leading the clinical team, which includes regional clinical directors and advisors, the Director of Nursing, and administration. There will also be travel across the motu, so the ability to be flexible around this will be essential to the role.

The key responsibilities of the position include:

  1. Providing clinical leadership and governance, ensuring that whānau Māori are prioritised in NHC activities, services, and strategies.  The role will lead and guide the organisation's contribution to equitable health outcomes, access, and experience for whānau that we serve across our networks.
  2. Accountability for clinical performance and outcomes across the organisation and its networks, including providing advice and direction across the organisation on risk management and improvement opportunities.
  3. Serving as an advocate and voice for equity, improvement and whānau ora to ensure that both NHC and the wider health and social care systems are responding to the needs of our priority populations, with a particular focus on whānau Māori.
  4. Supports education, training, and development (internally and externally) where appropriate e.g. cultural safety, CVD, diabetes education, clinical supervision, lectures, and appropriate research related activity.


About you:
We are looking for a passionate candidate with a strong clinical background seeking to lead in a clinical governance context that views equity as a key focus of service to whānau and key stakeholders to deliver mana whānau, whānau ora. You may currently be in a Clinical Director role or perhaps in another clinical leadership capacity looking for your next challenge.

We are looking for someone that displays strong people management experience and can lead initiatives not only at a strategic level but isn’t afraid to muck in alongside the team. You will have highly developed communication skills and be able to build strong professional relationships.

Desired experience:

  • 10 years + experience in a primary and/or public health sector
  • 2 years in a clinical or operational leadership role
  • Strong working knowledge of primary health care in Aotearoa
  • Clinical governance experience
  • Understanding of the complexities related to the health sector and Māori health
  • Sound knowledge of NZ health and social strategies and policy, including Whānau Ora
  • Strong relationship management skills
