The University Health and Counselling Service (UCHS) sits within Student and Scholarly Services and supports students to prevent and overcome personal difficulties relating to their physical and mental wellbeing.

Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

This is an exciting and varied role where no two days are the same! It offers the opportunity to support students, helping them stay well and thrive while studying.

We are looking for a qualified and highly motivated Counsellor or Psychologist to support students through their time at university. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment and have experience with brief intervention and managing metal health, this may be the perfect role for you.



This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), permanent position. 

We are also open to applicants seeking part time work (0.8 FTE).



The remuneration range for this role is between $90,000 - $96,000, depending on skills and experience.

This is a busy but empowering role where you will have the opportunity to change lives. To do that effectively you will need:

  • A tertiary qualification in the area of Counselling, Psychology, Mental Health
  • A valid Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act registration 
  • Experience working with brief intervention
  • Proven skills in building and maintaining relationships with clients and community agencies
  • Energy to be part of a busy team
  • A good understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Knowledge of mental health issues and risk management
  • Excellent time management, sound clinical judgement and tech savvy
  • Our preferred candidate will also have experience supporting our diverse student communities

Join our positive and enthusiastic team, committed to supporting students in achieving their academic goals. The Counselling team provides short-term brief intervention counselling support for students by helping them manage issues that may be impacting on their studies to assist and support them to achieve their full potential at the University.
