About the role    

The Insights & Analytics team is looking for a Data Analyst to help deliver high-quality analysis that supports transport policy, strategy, and investment decisions. 

In this role you'll work on interesting and varied transport-related topics, using data and analysis to help inform decision-making. From uncovering trends and building models to creating compelling visualisations, you'll turn information into practical insights that support better transport outcomes.

As a Data Analyst at the Ministry of Cities, Environment, Regions and Transport, you'll work within a collaborative team, grow your skills and deliver insights that inform real-world decisions.

You will be part of a collaborative team that turns data into insight — producing analysis, evaluation, and reporting that helps inform better transport outcomes.

Key responsibilities include:

• Undertaking data analysis to support advice on transport policy and strategy issues
• Contributing to the development of practical, robust modelling and analytical approaches
• Working with large datasets, including cleaning, checking, analysing and visualising data
• Supporting the preparation of clear insights, reports and visualisations for different audiences
• Contributing to analytical projects and work programmes across the Insights & Analytics team
• Building productive working relationships with colleagues across the Ministry and, where required, with other transport sector agencies
• Supporting the implementation of the Ministry’s data, insights and analytics approach across the transport sector.

Skills and experience    

You will bring experience working with data, analytical tools, and evidence-based problem solving. You will be confident exploring datasets, identifying patterns, checking data quality, and communicating insights clearly. You will be motivated by the opportunity to use data and analysis to support effective public policy and improve transport outcomes.

The successful candidate will bring the following skills and experience:

• Previous work experience in data analysis or statistics using analytic and modelling tools and technologies (R is essential)
• A bachelor’s degree within a relevant field 
• Experience in translating data and analysis into clear insights for non-technical audiences
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work through analytical questions in a structured way
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Curiosity, sound judgement, and a willingness to learn
• The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and manage defined pieces of work
• Experience in policy analysis in the public sector is advantageous. 

Salary range   

Salary range for this role is $78,983 - $97,246 pa. Appointment within this range will be based on skills and experience.
