Introduction:

Timberlands is a leading Forest Management Company with particular expertise in forest management and operations on a significant scale. Based in Rotorua, Timberlands manage 190,000ha of pine plantations in the Central North Island on behalf of Kaingaroa Timberlands and other clients.


If you are keen to join an innovative and digitally focused organisation who has a vision to double forest productivity as well as enhance wood quality by 2050 then we have a fantastic opportunity for an energetic and driven Data Engineer to join our highly skilled Technical Team to grow and drive digitisation.

Purpose of the Role:

Reporting to the Innovation & Technology Manager, the successful candidate in this role will ensure seamless data management for all users by establishing and upholding efficient systems for integrating, transforming, storing, and delivering data, enabling improved decision-making and insights for all within Timberlands.  

Key accountabilities include:

  • Managing data as a valuable business asset.
  • Design and develop data pipelines to extract, transform and load into our existing data warehouse.
  • Collaborate with data stewards, data scientists, analysts, and data generators to understand data requirements.
  • Integrate data from different sources ensuring consistency and integrity.
  • Transform raw data into usable formats through cleansing, aggregation, filtering, and enrichment techniques.
  • Optimise data pipelines and processing workflows for performance and scalability.
  • Monitor and tune data systems to resolve performance and enhance query performance.
  • Implement and maintain data governance policies, procedures, and controls.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in in computer science, data science, software engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in data management disciplines, including integration, data modelling, optimisation and quality.
  • Proven experience with modern data architectures and concepts such as cloud services (e.g., Azure, AWS) and modern data warehouse tools (e.g., Snowflake).
  • Ability to design, build, and deploy data solutions supporting AI, ML, and BI.
  • Proficiency in data science languages/tools such as Python, SQL, and R.
  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Ability to articulate business use cases, data management concepts, and analytical approaches.
  • Ability to collaborate within and across teams of different technical knowledge to support delivery and educate end users on data products.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate across teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and business acumen.
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn new skills and knowledge.
  • A self-motivated team player with excellent communication skills, a positive attitude, and an inquisitive approach to solving complex problems.
