Job Description - Electrician

Electrician – Full Time

Position Summary

The Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and inspecting electrical systems across residential, commercial, and industrial environments. The role requires strong technical capability, a commitment to safety, and the ability to deliver compliant, high‑quality electrical work in accordance with New Zealand regulations and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Installation & Maintenance

  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems including wiring, switchboards, lighting, outlets, and power distribution.
  • Lay out and run wiring through walls, ceilings, conduits, and cable trays.
  • Install and commission fixed appliances such as heat pumps, ovens, hot‑water systems, and ventilation units.
  • Perform upgrades, retrofits, and system improvements to meet current standards and efficiency requirements.

Testing, Diagnostics & Compliance

  • Conduct electrical testing (continuity, polarity, insulation resistance, earthing) using approved instruments.
  • Diagnose and repair faults in electrical systems, machinery, and control circuits.
  • Complete compliance documentation including Certificates of Compliance (CoC) and Electrical Safety Certificates (ESC).
  • Ensure all work meets New Zealand electrical codes, wiring rules, and safety regulations.

Control Systems & Automation

  • Install and connect control systems including relays, timers, VSDs, and PLC‑based controls (where applicable).
  • Maintain and service switchboards, distribution boards, and safety switches.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work alongside builders, engineers, contractors, and other trades to coordinate project delivery.
  • Provide clear updates, technical advice, and recommendations to supervisors or clients.
  • Supervise and mentor apprentices or trade assistants when required.

Health, Safety & Work Practices

  • Follow all workplace health and safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and PPE requirements.
  • Maintain tidy, safe, and compliant work areas.
  • Report hazards, incidents, or risks promptly.
  • Participate in site inductions, toolbox meetings, and ongoing competency training.

Tasks and Duties

  • Install and commission electrical wiring, switchboards, outlets, and lighting systems.
  • Test electrical systems using multimeters, insulation testers, loop impedance testers, and other diagnostic tools.
  • Install and terminate data, telecommunications, and low‑voltage cabling systems.
  • Prepare job materials, parts lists, and coordinate deliveries.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and testing devices in safe working condition.
  • Provide detailed reports on electrical system performance and improvement recommendations.
  • Stay current with industry developments, technologies, and regulatory changes.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential

  • Recognised electrical trade qualification or equivalent international certification.
  • Current EWRB registration and practising licence 
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience in electrical installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Strong understanding of electrical theory, materials, tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of New Zealand electrical safety standards and regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and specifications.
  • Strong problem‑solving and fault‑finding skills.
  • Physical capability to work at heights, in confined spaces, or perform manual tasks.
  • Valid driver’s licence.

Preferred

  • Experience across both residential and commercial environments.
  • Familiarity with automation systems, VSDs, and PLCs.
  • Experience supervising apprentices or junior staff.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
