We have an opportunity for an Engineering Lead join our Customer360 domain and provide leadership to the platform and deployment function and across the broader Customer360 programme.
As part of our wider Products & Services Technology area, you’ll work on a strategic colleague platform which supports a range of critical customer outcomes delivered through solutions providing Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Lending origination.

The Engineering Lead role offers the chance to combine technical leadership with people management to drive engineering excellence in development teams. By aligning with business goals and focusing on team empowerment and engineering excellence, you’ll cultivate a high-performance culture and drive continuous improvement.
This is a permanent, full time opportunity based in Wellington or Auckland. This is a hybrid position with three days in the office and two days where you can work flexibly.
What are five day to day tasks the person in this role will complete?
People Leadership: Lead Engineers and Testers through all employee lifecycle stages—attraction, recruitment, onboarding, development, retention, and offboarding. Foster a culture of trust, collaboration, and accountability to drive performance and alignment with business goals.
Technical Alignment: Ensure teams understand the technology strategy and priorities, aligning their efforts to deliver secure, scalable, and high-quality solutions that support business goals.
Oversight and Standards: Drive engineering excellence across BNZ Technology by enforcing unified standards, focusing on secure coding, automation, and aligning on our approach to ensure quality and reduce technical debt.
Capability and Capacity Planning: Ensure optimal workload distribution and skill alignment to meet both delivery and operational demands effectively.
Support and Enablement: Guide teams in problem-solving, promoting innovative approaches for continuous improvement.
What is the team culture and environment like?
An experienced and high performing group of Engineers, Business Analysts, Testers and Administrators working within a wider programme team across four companies and three countries. You’ll be a key member of our technical domain leadership group composed of Engineering Leads, Platform Owners, and Principal Engineers. The existing environment features people who are focused on colleague outcomes, stay cool in a crisis, and like to meet high-standards of quality in everything they do.
What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?
The most exciting thing about this role is variety. You’ll drive modern engineering practices through AI-assisted delivery and provide leadership to a highly motivated team. We’ve established the basics but there is still plenty ahead on the roadmap as we continuously improve Sales and Services and embed the Lending experience. No two days are the same and you get to work with some fantastic people.
What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity?
One of the most challenging aspects of this role is upholding technical standards as we deliver at scale through our inflight programme. This requires balancing technical oversight with pragmatism and the ability to influence without direct authority across teams.

This is an opportunity for a strong leader who is skilled in developing and motivating teams for high performance, growth, and collaboration. You will also bring excellent communication demonstrating the ability to convey goals, priorities, and technical requirements to both technical and non-technical audiences.
What skills are for this role?
Engineering Leadership Experience: Proven ability in leading technology teams, aligning with tech strategy, empowering teams, and adhering to standards.
Strong Technical Background: In-depth knowledge of SaaS engineering principles, including solution design, development processes, and deployment. Previous experience with Salesforce and/or nCino would be a plus.
Risk and Compliance Knowledge: Familiarity with security and regulatory practices in banking or similar industries. Previous experience in Lending would be beneficial.
Planning Expertise: Proficiency across planning and delivery, with a record of effective cross-functional collaboration.
