He angitūtanga: The opportunity 


  


Auckland Council’s Environmental Evaluation and Monitoring unit has an opportunity for an Environmental Specialist, Field Hydrology to join the Hydrology and Environmental Data Management team. 


 


If you are passionate about Auckland’s environment and are looking to further your scientific and field monitoring skills, this would be a fantastic role for you!   


 


Based in Auckland CBD and our Albany workshop, but working across the Auckland region, you will help deliver our core hydrological monitoring programmes. The role is majority field-based and will involve monitoring of rainfall, river flows, groundwater levels and other environmental parameters using specialist scientific equipment. 


 


On any given day, you could be: 


 



  • installing monitoring equipment and low-voltage electrical work 

  • entering streams to gauge flows 

  • surveying 

  • maintaining sites for quality data collection 

  • managing operational logistics 

  • processing hydrological data according to National Environmental Monitoring Standards 


  


You will have on-call responsibilities and the potential to assist Auckland Emergency Management/Civil Defence with information logistics during extreme weather events. You will also have the opportunity to support other programmes like water quality, coastal processes, marine ecology and terrestrial biodiversity. 


  


 


He kōrero mōu: About you 


  


This role requires experience, skills and knowledge in environmental monitoring and maintaining a hydrological network and associated equipment. 


 


With a degree or equivalent qualification in environmental science, environmental engineering or a New Zealand Diploma in Field Hydrology, you have passion for the outdoors and have an excellent health and safety attitude. 


 


You are able to conduct yourself confidently in the field, over variable terrain and in variable weather conditions.  You enjoy being part of a team, with a shared commitment to collecting and delivering high quality data. 


 


We will be looking for the following key role requirements: 


 



  • field work experience collecting environmental data, including using a range of equipment in data collection and managing logistics with team members  

  • strong problem-solver, you can come up with innovative solutions to technical challenges in the field 

  • comfortable working in remote areas, strong practical skills, and like to work with your hands   

  • good written and verbal communication skills 


  


The following are also desirable: 


 



  • report writing experience 

  • knowledge of using time series data management 

  • training and certifications for manual handling, power tool use and electrical installations 

  • an understanding of New Zealand’s regulatory framework and local government processes
