Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive

At Whanganui District Council we rely on our Business Support office for a variety of critical day-to-day tasks and to provide the necessary strategic assistance to help our executives to achieve their goals. Business Support currently has a vacancy for a highly skilled and proactive EA to join our team to support our chief executive (CE).

About our Chief Executive

Imagine a whirlwind in a tailored suit... from dawn til dusk, our CE is in perpetual motion, juggling meetings, strategising, turning challenges into opportunities and squeezing every drop of productivity out of his day. To support the way in which he works, he is seeking a seasoned Executive Assistant who has the unique blend of skills, qualities and characteristics that is compatible with his fast-paced and ever evolving environment.

About you

You will have a strategic mindset and a passion for our community. You will be a proactive problem-solver, an expert handler of priorities and can easily demonstrate how you are one of those people who simply gets stuff done. By applying for this role, you recognise the importance of strategic thinking, the unique challenges and responsibilities of working within a political setting and the intricacies of supporting a CE of a local government authority.

You will need

  • 5 years proven experience as an executive assistant to a senior executive or in a strategic support role - preferably in a government or public sector environment.
  • Experience in developing strategic communications.
  • Exceptional organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
  • Proven ability to anticipate needs, exercise sound judgement, and make decisions independently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications.
  • Have a working knowledge in Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga, grounding in Te Ao Māori, and an understanding of local government responsibilities.
  • High emotional intelligence and empathy, with the ability to build rapport and handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy.
