Job Description - Finance Business Partner

The Organisation:

The Role:


The Finance Business Partner reports directly to the South Island Operations Manager and plays a critical role within the South Island operational team, providing timely and accurate financial information for our key South Island contract as well as emerging new opportunities.  The Finance Business Partner leverages their financial skills to provide meaningful insights for operational leaders and drive value for our customers.


The role is responsible for end-to-end accounting functions for our South Island division, including the preparation of monthly management accounts, accurate and timely reconciliation of the balance sheet, forecasting support, and ongoing financial analysis.  The role has a dotted line to the General Manager - Finance.



As the Finance Business Partner, you will be responsible for the following:



  • Preparing the monthly claim for our key South Island contract, supported by insights into cost performance and outcomes delivered, alongside the relevant monthly financial reporting associated with this claim.

  • Monitoring financial performance under this contract (pain/gain share against the Target Outturn Cost).  Providing timely and accurate monthly financial reports to operational leaders and project managers to show the financial performance of jobs and workstreams versus budget.

  • Accurately producing month end reporting requirements for Civtec South Island (supporting other divisions as required), including accruals, prepayments, and other month-end journals.

  • Posting of plant and labour job cost entries (timesheets) to ensure complete and accurate records of Civtec work done during the reporting periods.

  • Preparation of inventory reporting alongside the SI Inventory team, providing insights into stocktake variances and driving optimal processes and stock levels with this team.

  • Overseeing AP function and supporting these duties as required.  (Shared responsibility with North Island Assistant Accountant).

  • Prepare regional financial forecasts and budgets, keeping aligned with national financial strategy.

  • Undertake other tasks to support the overall Civtec business as required from time to time.



Business Partnering



  • Translating financial information (variances and trends in performance and cost drivers) into actionable insights to support regional business performance and growth.

  • Ability to review, interpret and operationalise financial contracts.  

  • Working closely with the South Island Operations Manager and operational leaders to convert these insights into improvements.  Educate operational leaders and project managers to understand financial reports and Civtec systems.

  • Educating project managers in financial performance management and use of Civtec systems.

  • Working in partnership with other staff to improve systems, processes and ensure alignment with national finance frameworks and policies.



To be successful in this role, we are seeking candidates with:



  • Minimum three years’ experience in similar role

  • Intermediate to Advanced computer skills in using a variety of computer software (Microsoft Excel and ERP systems.  Dynamics 365 experience preferred)

  • Enthusiasm to work collaboratively with operational teams and improve customer outcomes

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate financial insights to operational staff

  • Commitment to continuous improvement and ability to problem-solve

  • Experience with project accounting, inventory management and job (or product) costing

  • Commitment to confidentiality and sensitivity of information
