Mō te tūnga | About the role

The Financial Crime Group’s (FCG) primary goal is denying criminals the opportunity to benefit from their offending and restrict their ability to re-invest in criminal activity. To achieve this, FCG utilise forensic accountancy to identify, trace and evidence the sources, users and destinations of illicit finances.

We are seeking two experienced accountants to join our Money Laundering and Economic Crime teams. Their role will be to manage reactive and proactive financial analysis as part of ongoing Police investigations; identifying money laundering activity, following illicit finance trails and unpicking complex fraud networks.

Our Forensic Accountants work closely with investigation teams across Police and with external partner agencies, assisting with effective interviews and interacting with members of the local and international financial community. The role involves reviewing and assessing financial information, building financial profiles of identified targets, and identifying legitimate and illegitimate income on an evidenced basis suitable for court proceedings.

Please note: there are two positions available. One position is based in Ellerslie, Auckland, and one position can either be based in the Auckland CBD, or in the Wellington CBD. Please ensure you note your preference of location on your application, otherwise we will assume you are happy to be considered for all three locations.

Key Accountabilities:

• Analyse financial evidence collected during criminal investigations. Keep accurate and detailed records of all information and decisions.


• Prepare and present (written and verbal) information in a clear and concise manner.


• Be prepared and willing to present evidence at court (training and support will be provided).


• Utilise Excel and other financial analysis tools and experience with income determination methods.


• Manage your time effectively in order to complete multiple files and meet deadlines.


• Manage inter-agency partnerships and maintain relationships with other Police business units, Crown Law and other external partners.

While experience contributing to financial investigations is highly valued and important, other skills and attributes demonstrating adaptability, tenacity and relationship management skills are equally critical.

To be successful in this role you will have:

• An analytical, process-driven mentality, capable of assessing an investigator’s developing needs.


• The ability to learn new systems and analyse money laundering and financial obfuscation techniques.


• A collaborative mindset, able to navigate work pressures, roadblocks and actively contribute to solving problems.


• Ability to present complex financial data in clear and a concise manner.


• Self-motivation and the ability to manage a high workload - able to actively prioritise both reactive and proactive work.


• Experience in detailed financial analysis and complex investigations is highly desirable.

Whakaritenga motuhake | Special requirements

• Applicants must be a full member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) or can attain this status within a reasonable timeframe.


• Applicants must be able to demonstrate practical experience in financial accounting practices in the private and public sector.


• If you have a preference for a Wellington-based role, please be aware that the team will move to new premises in Porirua by mid-2027.


• Some national travel may be required to support operations.

To be eligible for this role, you may be asked to obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET national security clearance. 

The minimum criteria for this level of national security clearance is:

NZ Citizen who has resided continuously in NZ for the last 10 years, or: 

• A Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in NZ for the last 10 years, or


• A citizen of or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, or United States of America, and has a background that can be verified by the NZSIS.

Utu ā-tau | Salary 

This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence between $103,836 - $109,983 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
