We are excited to announce the opening of our state-of-the-art Recreation Centre in late 2024, a hub for sport, health and wellbeing on our campus. As we embark on this new chapter, we are seeking an experienced  Group Fitness Team Leader , officially titled Recreation Programmes Team Leader .

As a  Recreation Programmes Team Leader , you will play a pivotal role in developing and delivering high-quality group fitness programmes and wellbeing opportunities that contribute to the vibrant culture of our university. You will lead a team of two direct reports dedicated to coordinating and delivering diverse active recreation activities and indirectly support a team of 45+ group fitness instructors and programme facilitators. Reporting to the Operations and Programmes Manager, you play an integral part of creating a culture of high performance, motivation and innovation. You will also work closely with the Team Leaders across Sport and Recreation, providing greater support and collaborative leadership.

The main responsibilities of the role include:

  • Leadership: Provide strong leadership to our Recreation Programmes team, including Coordinators, Instructors, Coaches, and Facilitators. Maintain a culture where your team love to come to work, and members love to work out.
  • Innovation and Service Development: Stay abreast of industry trends and innovations to improve our recreation programmes and active wellbeing initiatives, including developing and implementing new opportunities that meet the evolving needs of our community.
  • Recreation Programmes Management:  Oversee the operations delivery of recreation programmes, active wellbeing initiatives (including the award-winning Actively Well Programme), and events. This includes a comprehensive group fitness timetable, which is set to increase by approximately 30% for semester 1, 2025. We offer freestyle group fitness with over 50 classes scheduled each week and paid and private programmes delivered in-house and across our broader university network as well as online, which has a global reach.
  • Financial Management  by way of monitoring and tracking programme performance against budget targets.
  • Marketing and Communication  to ensure the effective promotion of our programmes and activities in collaboration with our wider Campus Life service division. The UoA Recreation Centre plays a pivotal role in student's success on campus, and we endeavour to see 50% of the student population use Sport and Recreation services.

This is a full-time (37.5 hrs/week), permanent role working Monday to Friday. The ideal candidate will be available to deliver inspiring freestyle group fitness classes at least 2-3x per week as part of the role. Flexible work hours will sometimes be required, including evenings and weekends, due to the nature of the business hours, schedule of activities, urgent class cover and event delivery requirements. This is a newly created position with career progression and professional development opportunities. The salary range for this role is $68,600 to $84,700, depending on skills and experience.

Our ideal candidate will have a passion for recreation, group fitness, health and wellbeing, customer experience, and a dedication to developing a team that provides a positive and inclusive environment for all university community members. They will also be a strong administrator with an analytical mind and a charismatic personality capable of stepping on stage to deliver top-tier workouts.

They will also bring the following skills and experience:

  • Fitness, health & wellbeing or recreation-specific higher education qualification or experience in a similar role supporting delivery of high quality and diverse, active recreation/wellbeing opportunities.
  • Team leadership experience of full-time permanent staff (2+ years) and a passion for developing people to perform at their full potential.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and delivering varied group fitness, recreation and wellbeing programmes
  • A proven track record of innovation and success in the industry
  • Strong planning and delivery skills, excellent communication abilities, and the capacity to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficient in administration, which includes a comprehensive understanding of MS Suite.
  • Capable of handling multiple tasks and priorities efficiently with an ability to pivot and adapt as necessary.
  • A knack for thinking proactively and taking initiative
