Our team of specialist pathologists, scientists, technicians, phlebotomists, couriers, and shared services personnel deliver a world-class service that together collects, analyses, and reports over 7 million patient results annually.

About the role | Mō te tūranga:
Our Specimen Services Department works shifts from 06:00-22:30 processing approximately 15,000 patient samples each day predominantly Monday to Friday with shorter Saturday and Sunday shifts.



As Head of Department, you’ll oversee a team of over 30 people, ensuring the consistent delivery of accurate, timely, and efficient diagnostic services. In partnership with the Laboratory Operations Manager, Clinical Pathologists, and other senior leaders, you will contribute to strategic direction and optimize departmental performance.



You will create an environment where people can thrive; encouraging accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. This role requires a leader who values professionalism, upholds ethical standards, and maintains a clear focus on patient care and confidentiality.



Key Responsibilities:



  • Leading the day-to-day running of the department to ensure accurate, timely, and high-quality diagnostic services.

  • Drive operational efficiency through continuous improvement, including evaluating and implementing new technologies, systems, and workflows.

  • Supporting and developing your team, building capability and confidence across laboratory systems and practices.

  • Ensure excellent customer service by meeting turnaround expectations, resolving issues effectively, and fostering clear, professional communication with stakeholders.

  • Contribute to effective financial management, including budget adherence, resource planning, stock control, and equipment investment decisions.



About you | He kōr ero mōu
To be successful in this role you need to have:



  • Current registration as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand, holding a valid Annual Practising Certificate.

  • Relevant qualifications and/or demonstrated experience within the discipline.

  • At least 3 years’ experience in a supervisory or staff management role.

  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop staff, including conducting performance reviews and supporting individual development ensuring staff competency and compliance with standards.

  • You take initiative, work well independently, and bring a proactive, solutions-focused approach.

  • You’re also a clear communicator who builds great relationships and delivers a professional, customer-focused service.

  • You’re comfortable using systems and technology, with strong attention to detail, and either bring or are keen to develop your knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
