Join our team in Palmerston North as the IDC Pavement Operator

We are seeking a proactive Pavement Operator to join our team and deliver pavement, and maintenance works on the state highway network as part of the IDC contract with NZTA in the Manawatu-Whanganui region. In this dynamic role, you will contribute to the upkeep of essential infrastructure, helping to keep the community safe and improving transport connectivity throughout the region.

In this key role you will be responsible for the skilled operation of heavy machinery—including asphalt pavers, rollers, skid steers, and other equipment—to expertly lay, compact, and finish surfaces for roads, car parks, motorways, and footpaths. Working closely with site supervisors and fellow crew members, you’ll ensure all tasks related to paving and surface preparation are completed safely, meet required specifications, and adhere to set project deadlines, delivering high-quality and durable pavement solutions within a collaborative team environment.
 

In addition to the above you will:

• Undertake pre-seal repairs, pavement dig outs, high and low shoulder repairs, water tabling, general road and cycleway/footpath construction, as well as any other planned maintenance as part of our IDC contract ensuring all works meet project specifications
• Specialist grading and finishing skills for pre-seal repairs and minor pavement construction
• Conduct pre-start safety checks and regular maintenance of machinery to ensure optimal operation and workplace safety
• Handle and apply materials such as asphalt and chip seal according to prescribed methods, monitoring temperature and distribution for uniformity and consistency
• Attend emergency call outs on a rostered basis and during standard hours of duty which can include both day and night shifts

We’re looking for someone with:

• Full Class 2 Licence
• WTR Endorsements
• Proven background in civil construction, specifically in pavement works (asphalt, chip seal, concrete, or road base)
• Experience in heavy machinery e.g. rollers, skid steer and pavers
• Be flexible to work AM and PM shifts up to 10 - 12 hours and weekends as required on rostered basis
• Ability to read and interpret works schedules and compliance standards
