Java Backend Engineer – Global Wave Group 

Location: Albany, Auckland (Office based)  

Working hours: 2 - 10:30 P.M. from Monday to Friday 

Reports to: Head of IT 

Role Purpose 

The Java Backend Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable backend systems that power critical business applications. This role will work closely with product managers, QA engineers, and fellow developers to deliver reliable, secure, and high-performance solutions. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Design, develop, and maintain backend applications using Java and Spring Boot 

• Build scalable RESTful APIs and microservices 

• Design and optimize database structures and queries 

• Integrate with third-party systems and external APIs 

• Participate in system architecture and technical design discussions 

• Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve production issues 

• Improve application performance, reliability, and security 

• Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code 

• Perform code reviews and share technical knowledge with team members 

• Collaborate within Agile development teams 

Essential Requirements 

• 3+ years of professional Java development experience 

• Strong experience with Java 8+ and Spring Boot 

• Solid understanding of RESTful API design and development 

• Experience with Microservices Architecture 

• Strong SQL skills and experience with relational databases such as MySQL 

• Experience with ORM frameworks such as MyBatis, Hibernate, or JPA 

• Experience with Git and CI/CD pipelines 

• Strong understanding of software design principles and best practices 

• Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills 

• Strong written and verbal communication skills 

Desirable 

• Experience with AWS cloud platforms 

• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes 

• Experience with messaging systems such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or SQS 

• Familiarity with Redis or other caching technologies 

• Experience with monitoring and logging tools such as ELK, Grafana, or Prometheus 

• Understanding of application security and authentication mechanisms 

• Experience working in FinTech, Trading, CRM, Payment Systems, or Enterprise Systems is a plus
