Technical Director / Team Leader – Stormwater

We have a solid pipeline of exciting projects, making this a great time to join our growing Infrastructure team at Babbage. As one of New Zealand’s largest employee-owned, multi-disciplinary consultancies, we work across civil, structural, geotechnical, environmental and building services to deliver practical, real-world solutions. Our teams are hands-on, collaborative, and focused on delivering outcomes that make a difference to communities.

We’re looking for an experienced Technical Director or Team Leader with significant experience in the water sector, particularly in stormwater. Our Technical Directors play a key role in delivery - this is well suited to engineers who enjoy being involved across the full project lifecycle.

Your Role:

This is an opportunity to lead and deliver complex water infrastructure projects from early stages through to construction monitoring, with real influence and support. We’re looking for practical engineers who:

• Manage and deliver stormwater projects


• Oversee full design and delivery, not just design concepts or models


• Can operate across asset management or design & build environments


• Confidently engage with clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies


• Contribute leadership and mentoring within a multidisciplinary team

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the design and delivery of stormwater projects, including networks, outfalls, inlet and outlet structures, energy dissipation structures, culverts and treatment devices


• Provide technical leadership within the team


• Prepare briefs, estimates, feasibility studies, and contract documentation


• Manage construction phases and deliver to time, budget, and quality


• Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders


• Monitor hazards and ensure compliance with H&S practices


• Coach and mentor junior engineers


• Stay current with relevant codes, standards, and software

What You’ll Bring:

• A tertiary qualification in Civil or Environmental Engineering


• 10+ years’ experience in water infrastructure (ideally in NZ)


• CPEng or close to application


• A practical mindset - confident moving from site to boardroom
  


• Strong technical design capability in stormwater hydraulics


• Experience with trenchless construction methods


• Leadership capability and a collaborative approach to problem solving
