The Management and International Business Department

The Department of Management and International Business (MIB) is one of seven departments within the Auckland Business School. The department is organised in five disciplinary areas: Organisation Studies; Entrepreneurship; Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour; Innovation and Strategy; and International Business. The disciplines are taught across several programmes, including undergraduate degrees, postgraduate taught and research programmes, executive education, and PhD. Several research centres are associated with MIB, such as the Centre for Research on Modern Slavery, the Aotearoa Centre for Leadership and Governance, the Aotearoa Centre for Enterprising Women, the Dame Mira Szaszy Research Centre, and the Circular Economy in Business Research Beacon.

Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We seek to hire an ambitious early-career scholar whose work advances understanding of innovation from a strategic perspective in times of digital and societal transformation.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose research programmes complement those in the Innovation and Strategy disciplinary area  with fresh perspectives on how businesses can adapt, innovate, and create long-term value.

Areas of particular interest include:

  • How emerging technologies (e.g. generative AI) shape/reshape innovation processes and ecosystems - with particular attention to their implications for strategic decision-making under uncertainty, organisational learning, and resilience in business and society.
  • Sustainable and responsible innovation research in the context of technological change - including digital transformation, circular economy models, and strategies that address societal challenges and ensure equitable outcomes.

We value candidates whose research has potential for both academic and societal impact. The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential to publish in top generalist and/or specialist disciplinary journals as part of a balanced publication portfolio.

We value candidates whose teaching integrates research in ways that engage and equip students to tackle complex strategic challenges. Waipapa Taumata Rau: the University of Auckland’s Teachwell framework outlines good teaching practice. The successful candidate will demonstrate at least some of the core teaching capabilities at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Teaching innovation in ways that integrate it with related disciplines and /or strategic themes prioritised at the Faculty of Business and Economics (strategic themes) is advantageous too.

 

This is a fulltime (40 hours per week), permanent position.

The remuneration range for this role is between $97,831 - $119,204 NZD, depending on the level of appointment.

He kōrero mōu | About you

You are an energetic, can-do person with a PhD in Innovation or a related discipline (e.g., Management, Entrepreneurship). Our ideal candidate will also have the following skills:

  • Potential for publishing in top-ranked general or specialist disciplinary journals (noting the ABCD and the FT50 rankings).
  • Must demonstrate evidence of at least some core teaching competencies.
  • Potential of teaching the innovation topic by integrating with other disciplines and/or as part of strategic themes is preferred, but not essential
  • Ability to plan, organise, and administer your work
  • Establish and maintain relationships with students, academic peers, and professional/administrative staff
  • Work cooperatively with colleagues in new and established arrangements to contribute to the efficient running of the University (service and academic citizenship).
  • Knowledge and experience of committees/roles within academic units is preferred, but not essential
