Founded in 1869, the University of Otago is the oldest University in New Zealand. We like to think of the English and Linguistics Programme, however, as both the oldest and the newest with regard to the range of our teaching and research, with offerings from Medieval literature through to narrative fiction and poetry in digital media. We have creative writing offerings at all undergraduate levels, with papers the engage with fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, travel writing, and creative writing for videogames and interactive media.

Te mahi | The role

The English and Linguistics Programme is inviting applications for a Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer position in Applied Linguistics/ TESOL. This position involves a combination of teaching, research, publication, and service.

The role will be informed by Te Tiriti o Waitangi and an engagement with te reo, tikanga, and te ao Māori. The successful candidate will have knowledge and expertise in sociolinguistics and language education, including bilingualism and multilingualism, multilingual education, language-in-education policy, and TESOL curriculum and pedagogies that support linguistically diverse learners. They will have confidence and competency teaching in diverse cultural environments. Applicants with Aotearoa New Zealand teacher registration are strongly preferred.

The successful candidate will coordinate, teach, and/or co-teach a range of our linguistics and TESOL undergraduate and postgraduate papers from 100- to 500-level. You will take a foundational role in building and supporting the Master of TESOL postgraduate qualification in coordination with the TESOL Coordinator.

They will supervise research at Honours, MA, and PhD levels, while developing and maintaining a strong research profile of their own. They will seek external research funding, fulfill administrative roles, and undertake professional service activities that contribute to the overall effectiveness and standing of the programme, including community outreach through partnerships with schools and initiatives that support teacher professional learning.

Kā pūkeke me kā wheako | Skills and Experience

The successful candidate is expected to hold a PhD degree in Applied Linguistics/ TESOL.
You will also have a proven track record of publications in Applied Linguistics/ TESOL, and the ability to teach across a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate linguistics and TESOL papers and supervise postgraduate research.

Ideal candidates will also possess the following skills and experience:
•    A commitment to being a productive collaborator with a track record of working collegially.
•    An excellent research and publication profile.
•    Demonstrated experience and ability in delivering high-quality teaching.
•    Demonstrated experience in supporting the professional learning and development of pre-service and in-service language teachers, preferably within Aotearoa New Zealand.
•    A commitment to fostering collaborative teaching and research relationships with Māori and/or Pasifika communities, and demonstrated multi-cultural competence in teaching.
•    A commitment to a curriculum that includes gender-diverse, racially diverse, and neuro-diverse authors and topics in their teaching.

Pūroko | Further Information

This is a permanent, full-time position, based in Ōtepoti Dunedin, and is available from February 2027.

The appointment ranges for this role are:
•    Lecturer - $97,377 to $ 114,943 per annum.
•    Senior Lecturer - $ 120,494 to $137,444 per annum.

Appointment level will be determined by the candidate’s academic achievements, skills, and experience.
