About the role | Mō te tūranga: Our Specimen Services department is looking for a Medical Laboratory Scientist – Operations Support for our Specimen Services Department. This role isn’t about managing others—it’s about contributing scientific expertise within a team-driven environment. You’ll collaborate closely with colleagues in leadership, commercial coordination, and operational support, playing a central role that connects and complements each of these areas.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide operational support for clinical trials and laboratory troubleshooting.
Serve as the escalation point for resolving complex issues for laboratory and customer service staff.
Monitor real-time laboratory turnaround times (TAT) for urgent samples, ensuring quality service delivery.
Liaise with medical professionals, handling complaints, and providing operational resolutions.
Investigate and document service failures, offering recommendations for improvements.
Assist with request form interpretation and provide guidance on sample requirements and billing policies.
Coordinate with multiple departments to manage, audit and troubleshoot new and ongoing trials with a high degree of accuracy.
Participate in quality assurance activities, maintaining compliance with Awanui’s Quality Management System.
Support the development and implementation of health and safety standards in the laboratory.
Specimen Handling & Processing: As per specific study requirements, accurately barcode, receipt, and prepare incoming specimens for laboratory analysis, ensuring all samples are managed according to the study protocols.
Communication: Respond to telephone inquiries and emails in a professional and timely manner.

To succeed in this role you will need:
A registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with an Annual Practising Certificate.
A sound knowledge of medical terminology, laboratory operations including safety, operation of equipment and hands-on practical experience is desirable.
The ability to work in a methodical manner adhering to strict quality procedure guidelines.
Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work independently and within a small team.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for dealing with both internal and external stakeholders.
Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a high-pressure environment and have a keen eye for detail.
Knowledge of quality assurance systems and laboratory processes.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
