Job Description - Monitor / Senior Monitor

Permanent, fulltime, Ōtautahi




  • Support improving outcomes for tamariki and rangatahi

Aroturuki Tamariki, the Independent Children’s Monitor, monitors the oranga tamariki system, providing insights that drive continuous improvement and improves outcomes for tamariki (children) and rangatahi (young people), particularly tamariki Māori and children with disabilities. 



Our Monitors / Senior Monitors are the public face of Aroturuki Tamariki.  They work in teams, engaging with the community to understand and record the experience of whānau, tamariki and rangatahi, family, professionals, caregivers and others who work with those involved in the care and protection and/or youth justice pathways. We analyse what we hear from communities we visit, alongside the nationwide data and information we collect. We use this analysis to inform our reports. 




We are looking for people with:



  • a social work or equivalent qualification  



  • an understanding of child protection and youth justice practice, as well as understanding the oranga tamariki system 



  • the ability to build meaningful connections with a wide range of people and organisations  



  • the ability to engage with tamariki and rangatahi and their whānau   



  • knowledge, experience, capability and understanding of tikanga Māori and te reo Māori 



  • facilitation skills   



  • the ability to note take effectively and record relevant information from monitoring activities.  



In addition to the above, a Senior Monitor would be expected to:




    • bring a risk lens to support the mahi (work) we do




      • have strong writing skills and the ability to draft reports and other professional documents

      Starting salaries are negotiated based on relevant skills and experience, our salary range for the Monitor role is $68,660 –$83,003. We expect to offer a starting salary of between $89,622 and $112,551 for the Senior Monitor role.
