Job Description - Payroll Officer

  • $64 - $69K per annum + Rā Oranga wellness days
  • Start 20 – 24 hours per week, increasing to 40 hours per week in Jan 2025
  • 1 year fixed term position
  • Hybrid and flexible working options

Are you a dedicated Payroll whizz looking for a new challenge in 2024? Due to an internal transfer, we have an exciting opportunity to work in payroll in the Local Government sector! The current incumbent is transferring into a new role at Council; therefore, you will have the opportunity to learn and share payroll for the first 6 months and then take it over in a full-time capacity at the start of 2025.

Reporting to the Team Leader Payables, you’ll ensure timely and accurate payroll processing, excellent customer service, and making efficiencies and enhancements to our payroll processes.

You will be responsible for:

  • Accurate and timely processing of fortnightly payroll
  • Ensuring payroll compliance with legislation, organisation policy and Employment Agreements.
  • Updating leave and remuneration changes, control processing of backpays, out of cycle and special pays
  • Prepare, and submit PAYE, Union Fees and Superannuation contributions.
  • Reconcile payroll and withholding tax suspense accounts.
  • Process month end reconciliations
  • Process Fortnightly and quarterly reporting
  • Respond to staff queries about our pay related software, leave and benefits

About you | Ko ngā pūmanawa ōu

Ideally you’ll have at least 3 - 4 years of payroll processing experience, preferably for a medium to large sized Unionized organisation. You’ll have current knowledge of relevant New Zealand employment legislations and practices and Holiday act, and a highly organised approach to ensuring deadlines are met. You’ll be self-motivated to problem solve within legislation and company policies and demonstrate strong customer service and relationship management skills. You will be known for your high levels of accuracy, attention to detail, integrity and confidentiality.

This is a 1-year fixed term role starting at 20 – 24 hours per week and increasing to 40 hours per week Monday – Friday in January 2025 when the current incumbent fully transfers to her new role. The ideal candidate will be available Mondays and Tuesdays to support fortnightly payroll activities, but we have flexibility for the right candidate.
