Job Description - Platform Owner

Worker Type:

Permanent

Here at BNZ, it's about more than just banking. We work together in an agile, energising environment to create innovative solutions through our promise "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way."

We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. There is the opportunity for growth, learning and career development. No two days are the same.

The Platforms & Tooling team sits within the Data & Analytics Platforms domain and owns the BNZ Data Hub (BDH) - BNZ’s one‑stop shop for trusted data. We provide the secure, scalable platform and modern tooling that underpins analytics, reporting, data products and future AI capability, while also responsibly operating and maintaining legacy platforms as we modernise. As part of that journey, we ensure legacy tooling remains stable and compliant today, and is progressively decommissioned and exited over time, keeping the ecosystem safe, sustainable and fit for the future.

This role can be based in Wellington or Auckland. It is a hybrid role with three days in the office and two days where you can work flexibly. Anchor days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in Auckland and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in Wellington.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

We sat down with the People Leader (who you would report to) and they told us the following about the role:

What are 5 day-to-day tasks the person in this role will complete?

  • Prioritising work: Regularly assess and prioritise platform work (using Agile methodologies) based on customer value, business impact and available capacity, making sure day‑to‑day application management meets Critical Hygiene Framework (CHF) expectations – vulnerability and patching management etc.
  • Managing the roadmap and backlog: Maintain and evolve the platform roadmap, keeping the backlog up to date, well‑prioritised with quarterly planning sessions and clearly understood so the team knows what’s coming next and why.
  • Tracking success: Monitor key metrics and health indicators to understand how the platform is performing, identify issues early, and drive continuous improvement across stability, security and delivery.
  • Engaging stakeholders: Share progress, changes and upcoming releases with stakeholders, working closely across teams to align priorities, manage dependencies and remove blockers.
  • Delivering safely: Work with engineering, security and delivery teams to plan, build and release platform changes, ensuring quality, security and operational readiness are considered throughout the delivery lifecycle.

What is the team culture and environment like?

We are an experienced, high‑performing team of data engineers who are in strong demand. We foster a culture of collaboration, knowledge‑sharing and mentoring to consistently meet delivery commitments. We value innovation, remain calm under pressure, and uphold high standards of quality in everything we do.

What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?

We are seeking an experienced Platform Owner or Lead to help balance the growing portfolio of applications and services owned by the team, as we continue to adopt new technologies and scale.

What technical skills are REQUIRED for this role?

In no particular order of priority, we’re looking for experience across tools and practices such as Jira, AWS and Azure, Airflow or other scheduling platforms, CI/CD pipelines, Terraform, Snowflake, Fivetran, Informatica or alternative ETL technologies, a range of database platforms, Agile delivery methodologies, and modern DevOps and FinOps practices.

What will success look like for the candidate in this role?

A successful Platform Owner fully owns their squad’s delivery end‑to‑end, collaborates effectively with other Platform Owners, Leads and Engineering Leaders, and contributes meaningfully to the Data & Analytics Platforms leadership team. They take clear accountability for the operational health and service management of the applications they own and know when to escalate or seek support.
