Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role


We’re looking for a seasoned Principal Adviser to join our team. In this influential role, you’ll lead the delivery of high-quality, timely, and consistent ministerial advice, correspondence, and official information responses.


 


You’ll be a key driver of strategic thinking and continuous improvement, guiding complex work programmes and mentoring others to lift performance. As a trusted adviser to senior leaders, you’ll also play a vital role in cross-agency collaboration and embedding best practice across the system.


 


To be considered for this position, you must be a current New Zealand Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a NZ Government National Security Clearance – at Confidential level.  You can use this online tool to self-check your eligibility for a security clearance.  Please note that this tool is not part of the formal security clearance process:

Kōrero mōu | About you


You’re an experienced professional with a strong track record in ministerial servicing, executive support, or public sector policy. You bring political nous, sound judgement, and a calm, solutions-focused approach to complex and sensitive issues.


 


You thrive in fast-paced environments, build strong relationships with ease, and are known for your ability to influence and lead with credibility.


 


You will need to demonstrate:



  • Proven experience in ministerial servicing, public sector policy, or executive support at a senior level

  • Strong political awareness and the ability to navigate complex and sensitive issues with confidence

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a sharp eye for detail

  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to build trusted relationships across all levels

  • A commitment to continuous improvement and lifting performance across teams
