Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

In addition to ensuring we have safe drivers on our roads, getting a driver licence opens the door to many opportunities - jobs, education, support for whānau and healthcare. Our Community Based Driver Licensing initiatives work towards addressing equity and inclusion challenges for obtaining a drivers licence in under-licensed communities. It’s a partnership led by NZTA Waka Kotahi involving six government agencies active in driver licensing.

The Principal Advisor, Community Based Driver Licensing will be leading the development and implementation of our strategy, delivery and evaluation of investment in communities for community-based driver licensing initiatives. This will include undertaking all aspects of project management (including transitioning out of ‘project mode’ and into BAU) while providing thought leadership to ensure that we appropriately identify where our regulatory system is creating unintended disparities for New Zealanders and how to structure initiatives and investments to ensure successful outcomes.

We are looking for someone who cares deeply about the difference that can be made through this mahi and thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will need to have excellent interpersonal skills, needing to work directly with groups across NZTA, other government agencies and directly with community providers.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Project management experience

  • Experience in developing investment strategies, frameworks, processes and practices

  • The ability to translate complex ideas into audience appropriate language & documents

  • Strong critical thinking skills and application of problem solving techniques

  • Your ability to build intentional relationships and work collaboratively with others

  • A strong track record of delivery from your previous roles

The following would also be an advantage:

  • A relevant qualification

  • Knowledge of the driver licensing system and/or regulation

  • Knowledge and experience of applying Te Ao Māori principles

It is expected the holder of this role will be privy to classified information from time to time and understands the New Zealand governments classification system and how to maintain information in line with current policies and requirements.

You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector. View the  position description here.
