The Department of Conservation works to protect and restore Aotearoa’s unique biodiversity, drawing on science, Mātauranga Māori, and strong partnerships. Our teams tackle some of the country’s toughest environmental challenges, from safeguarding threatened species to restoring ecosystems at scale. A key part of this work is managing mammalian pests, which have a major impact on native wildlife and habitats. Especially those species targeted through Predator Free.
This role plays an important part in that mission, helping ensure our decisions are backed by robust research, practical expertise, and meaningful collaboration with our Treaty partners.
He angitūtanga | About the role
This is a senior science leadership role focused on improving how DOC manages mammalian pests. You will provide fit-for-purpose scientific and specialist advice, lead research programmes, and support the development, testing, and reporting of interventions to address complex conservation challenges.
You’ll work across DOC and with external partners to influence research priorities, integrate Mātauranga Māori, and ensure science is translated into practical solutions. This role also involves coaching and mentoring others, building capability, and contributing to a high-performing team culture.
In this role you will:
Lead and deliver high-quality, influential science advice to inform biodiversity and ecosystem management
Build strong relationships with Treaty partners, science providers, and stakeholders
Design and manage research programmes, including contracts with external providers
Scan national and international research to identify opportunities and influence priorities
Communicate complex science clearly to a wide range of audiences
Publish research results and contribute to national and international forums
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
We are looking for someone who brings:
Strong scientific expertise in animal pest management and conservation
Ability to integrate Mātauranga Māori into research programmes
Experience with toxins and their use to control predators / mammalian pests
Demonstrated understanding of synthetic biology including genetic tools for mammalian pest control
Proven ability to design, lead, and evaluate research programmes
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including translating science into practical advice
Experience influencing research priorities and working with science funders and providers
A relevant tertiary qualification (preferred- Ph.D. preferred M.Sc. minimum)
Understanding or willingness to learn Māori tikanga and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it relates to your work
Work in genuine partnership with Māori and act as an honourable treaty partner
Being a genuine Treaty partner means:

Experience mentoring and building capability in others

The salary range for this position is $109,160 to $143,000 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
