Job Description - Product Manager

The Product Manager’s purpose is to validate product viability through rapid experimentation, ensuring we deliver meaningful customer value while meeting business objectives. This role exists to reduce uncertainty: testing assumptions early, learning quickly, and scaling only what proves to work.

As a Product Manager, you are both an enabler and an active contributor within a cross-functional product team that thrives on discovery, prototyping, and technical experimentation. You champion learning over certainty, evidence over opinion, and progress over perfection.

You are accountable for shaping, validating, and progressing the most impactful opportunities using experiments, prototypes, and data-driven insights to help Snapper and our customers achieve their goals.

  • The Product Manager reports to the Head of Product

  • This role has up to 3
    direct reports

  • Key relationships with all skill areas across Snapper, in particular your Product Team, Marketing, Customer Success and Business Development teams

  • Based in Wellington, NZ

What does Snapper do?

Since 2006, Snapper Services has been at the forefront of creating modern, customer-focused public transit solutions. While you may be most familiar with the Snapper card, we’ve been working on much more behind the scenes.

At Snapper, we transform public transit data into actionable intelligence with our Mosaiq Transit Intelligence Suite. Through global partnerships with operators and authorities, Mosaiq improves on-time performance, operational efficiency, and decision-making with real-time insights.

Combining design, data science, and usability, we believe great digital design elevates the passenger and operator experience. This vision led to Mosaiq—a platform driving sustainable change and improving user experiences in public transit. You will be part of Snapper, and your focus will be on advancing the growth and success of Mosaiq, shaping the future of public transit.

What does the Product Manager do?

You are responsible for aligning the team around clear product objectives while enabling fast, informed decision-making through experimentation and validation. This includes:

  • Being accountable for the structured delivery plan and deciding on the scope of each deliverable

  • Deeply understanding customer problems, behaviours, and constraints

  • Framing problems as hypotheses and designing experiments to validate (or invalidate) them early

  • Working hands-on with designers, engineers, and data scientists to create prototypes, proofs of concept, and experimental solutions

  • Collaborating with SMEs across the organisation to pressure-test ideas and uncover insights throughout the product lifecycle

  • Synthesising insights from qualitative research, quantitative data, technical exploration, and experimentation outcomes

  • Prioritising problems and experiments based on potential impact, learning value, and feasibility—not just delivery certainty

  • Facilitating and participating in product discovery, fast prototyping and delivery activities. You will be the one clearly articulating the Why and What, while empowering the team to determine the How

  • Defining success metrics for experiments and products, measuring outcomes, and using results to inform next steps

  • Maintaining documentation, customer value plan outlook and reporting, experiment reviews, and learning artefacts that track progress, insights, and decision rationale

  • Coordinating the end-to-end product journey from early exploration through experimentation, validation, scaling, and iteration

  • Championing a product vision that is grounded in evidence, learning, and customer impact

What will help you to be successful in this role?

  • At least 5 years professional experience as a Product Manager or in a closely related product-led role, preferably in a data-centric technical context

  • Strong ability to collaborate with engineers, designers, data scientists, and senior stakeholders in a constructive, curious way

  • A genuine passion for understanding end-to-end customer journeys and the systems that shape them

  • Experience tackling ambiguous, constraint-heavy problems using experimentation, prototypes, and iterative learning

  • Confidence in making decisions with imperfect information, balancing risk, learning, and opportunity

  • Ability to communicate ideas, trade-offs, and outcomes clearly through structured, data-informed narratives, including those sourced from academic research papers

  • Comfort querying, exploring, and interpreting data independently to inform product decisions

  • Curiosity about new techniques, technologies, and approaches—especially in data science, analytics, and experimentation

  • The maturity to recognise when emerging technologies or technical approaches can unlock new product value

  • Firm beliefs held loosely in an open, collaborative mindset, with comfort knowing sometimes the evidence may prove you wrong

  • Enjoyment of the technical aspects of data science and collaborating closely with highly technical teammates

We want you to do well, and it looks like this:

You are relentlessly curious about how our public transport customers actually behave, where friction exists, what assumptions don’t hold, and which problems are worth solving. You care more about learning and uncovering opportunities than shipping features.

You help the team prioritise problems, experiments, and ideas that maximise learning and long-term impact, keeping focus on what is valuable, viable, and scalable for Mosaiq.

You stay close to Snapper’s designers, engineers, data scientists, customer success, and commercial teams. You work with them to create clarity on why we’re doing the work and what success looks like.

You enable the team to ship the solutions that genuinely improve Mosaiq’s credibility with customers and market-focused outcomes, while continuously validating assumptions and adapting based on evidence.

Complexity doesn’t intimidate you. You are deeply invested in understanding the technology, the data and the opportunity with the layered realities of the public transport ecosystem.

Learnings are captured, shared, and turned into improved decisions, better experiments, and new growth opportunities.

You build trust across the organisation through curiosity, humility, and positive influence, helping Snapper’s products reflect our standard of excellence through thoughtful experimentation and validated outcomes.

Bring your unique self

To be excellent in our Snapper team we want your unique style and contribution, and your own version of these attributes/mindset …

Excellent communicator able to navigate technical and business worlds with confidence.

Approachable and open-minded role model who encourages engagement in your peers and works closely with Snapper staff of all roles and technical abilities.

Strong technical skills in modern software development practices, agile and fast-moving deployment methods and network and application best practices (You don’t need to be a developer but you know how they work and what their world looks like).

Practical and pragmatic approach to security guidance with a focus on finding safe ways to do things rather than reasons not to.

Ability to work autonomously, make decisions and structure your own work approaches.

A positive mindset and ability to see the opportunity in adversity.

Our expectations and values at Snapper

We live into five core values in our work and interactions at Snapper.

Being Resilient. Using a positive mindset to handle change

Acting with Integrity. Being open and honest with each other. Fostering a safe space for the sharing of our thoughts and ideas.

An Innovative outlook. Looking at problems through as many lenses as we can. Applying it to people, processes, personal development, etc; not just code. We expect this as individuals and collectively.

Collaborating. Anything of value happens through a team. No one person has all of the skills to solve our customers' problems. We’re inclusive and open to all voices.

Building Excellence. Not to be confused with perfection. Making sure measures are clear and fit for purpose. And celebrating it as we go.
