Job Description - Project Engineer - Invercargill

At Fulton Hogan, we’re all about Good Work. Good Work is serious work, not so serious people – we’re solving real problems and building things that matter, but we don’t need a stiff corporate vibe to do it. We knuckle down when it counts, then share the wins together. Good Work means high expectations, low ego – you’ll be trusted with real responsibility, given honest feedback, and backed to grow. We care about how we get the job done, not just the outcome.

About the role

We’re looking for an experienced Project Engineer to join our team in Invercargill, supporting a major project for a heavy industrial client. This is serious work in a live industrial environment, with plenty of moving parts, a wide mix of trades, and the kind of complexity that calls for someone who can hit the ground running.

This is not a step-up role. We’re after someone already operating confidently at Project Engineer level, with proven experience delivering civil and structural works on site and the confidence to make good calls when it counts.

You’ll play a key part in coordinating and delivering works across structural concrete, drainage, and structural steel, with some exposure to mechanical and electrical interfaces a bonus, not a core requirement. If you’re practical, organised, low ego, and like being close to the action, this is a chance to do Good Work on a challenging and rewarding project.

We’d ideally like someone based in Invercargill. That said, we’re also open to being flexible on location for the right person, with Christchurch our preference and Dunedin also workable. Mining environment experience is a bonus!

Key role responsibilities

You’ll be trusted to:

  • Lead Day-to-day engineering delivery across key work fronts on site.
  • Coordinate Construction activities across structural concrete, drainage, and structural steel packages.
  • Work Closely with supervisors, subcontractors, suppliers, and the wider project team to keep works safe, compliant, and moving.
  • Support Planning, sequencing, and short-term programming in a busy live industrial environment.
  • Manage Quality documentation including ITPs, QA records, inspections, as-builts, and related reporting.
  • Monitor Safety, environmental, and quality performance, and step in early when something needs attention.
  • Help Drive efficient site coordination across multiple trades and interfaces.
  • Support Cost control, productivity tracking, and progress reporting alongside the Project Manager.
  • Build Strong working relationships on site and contribute to a team culture that is flat, friendly, and focused on delivery.

We’re looking for someone with

  • Proven experience already working at Project Engineer level on civil or infrastructure projects.
  • Strong technical delivery experience across structural concrete, drainage, and structural steel.
  • The ability to coordinate multiple trades and keep calm when the pace lifts.
  • A practical understanding of working in live industrial, construction, or similarly complex environments.
  • Exposure to mechanical and electrical (M&E) interfaces would be useful, but it’s not a core requirement.
  • A strong commitment to safety, quality, and doing the job properly.
  • Mining environment experience is a bonus!

Good Work equals Good Benefits

At Fulton Hogan, we genuinely care about the wellbeing of our people and giving them the tools and opportunities they need to succeed and grow with us. You’ll have access to:

  • Company Vehicle
  • KiwiSaver employer contributions
  • Fuel discount card
  • Parental leave top-up payment with additional return to work support
  • Family scholarships
  • Ongoing training and development, career growth and progression opportunities
  • Great discounts at a wide range of retailers
  • Medical insurance “an eligibility period applies”
  • Life insurance

How to apply

If you’re an experienced Project Engineer ready to take on a complex civil project for a heavy industrial client, we’d love to hear from you.

We’d ideally like someone based in Invercargill, but we’re also open to people are open to travelling, particularly from Christchurch, with Dunedin also a workable option.

Apply now with your CV and a brief cover letter outlining your experience across structural concrete, drainage, and structural steel delivery.
