About the Role:

MOTAT has a rare opportunity to put your engineering skills into practice by restoring, maintaining, and upgrading heritage Railway machinery and infrastructure across MOTAT. Each project has its own story to share with visitors, whether it’s repairing locomotives, maintaining Railway tracks, or supporting volunteers and contractors on Railway projects. This hands-on work requires mechanical skill, problem-solving, and a passion for heritage engineering.

Hours: Monday to Thursday, 40 hours per week, you get a 3 day weekend!

Get in touch with us if you:

  • Have experience in mechanical, engineering, fitting/turning, welding, or heavy industry work.

  • Are hands-on, practical, and mechanically minded, with a desire to learn new skills.

  • Are comfortable working with tools, machinery, and heavy equipment.

  • Are physically fit and enjoy lifting, moving, and operating heritage rail items.

  • Are safety conscious and can follow processes and procedures.

  • Have basic computer literacy and excellent attention to detail.

  • Hold a full driver’s licence.

It would be an advantage if you also:

  • Have experience with welding/fabricating or fitting/turning.

  • Have experience operating hi-rail diggers.

  • Have worked on steam engines, boilers, or other industrial heritage items.

  • Understand museum practice or heritage artefacts.

  • Hold a forklift licence or R, T & W endorsements.
