We are looking for Registered Nurses to join Hospice Waikato’s Palliative care team in our in-patient unit (IPU)

Hospice Waikato provides high quality, patient focused, palliative care, for Waikato people living with life limiting conditions and their whaanau.

We have a great culture, and our leaders genuinely care for our people. This is an amazing opportunity to work interprofessional with our incredible on-site medical team and family services team. We are focused on delivering high quality, holistic care, tailored to individual patients.

This position is to work on site at Cobham Drive Hamiliton in our 11 bedded In-patient Unit. You will be part of the IPU team delivering palliative care and support to patients 24/ 7.

The role will therefore include working am shifts 7:00 – 15:30, PM shift 14:30 – 23:00 and night duties 22:30 – 07:30.

You will be part of a vibrant team providing mainly symptom management and end of life care. You will have the privilege of being part of the hospice Waikato team walking alongside the patients and their whaanau on their journey. Many of our patients start their journeys with hospice, at home under our hospice community team and you will be part of the comprehensive services hospice offers.

We can offer…

  • Time to care
  • A supportive team
  • Free onsite parking
  • Free professional supervision

  • Learning and development onsite team
  • Opportunity to make a difference to our people

  You’ll need to bring…

A current RN Practicing Certificate

  • Commitment to providing holistic and equitable care
  • Motivation to have a positive effect on the quality of life for patients and whaanau
  • A compassionate nature
  • Willingness to learn from our patients and whaanau
  • Commitment to providing holistic and equitable care
  • Motivation to have a positive effect on the quality of life for patients and whaanau

Not sure if palliative care and Hospice Waikato has the pace, variety, or transferable skills to suit you?

Day to day our team give the best possible care to our patients, we have the time to sit and be with our patients.

What our RNs say about the role:

  • We make a difference for patients and family; this is the most important event that happens. We get to help create an experience to be supportive, uplifting, positive and remembered for all the right reasons.
  • It’s ok to spend time with patient and family. In fact, it is encouraged.
  • Patient's family is just as important as the patient. In my experience one of the patients' biggest worries is their family being supported well, in doing this we effectively help the patient.
  • We use specialized medications, anaesthetics such as dexmedetomidine and phenobarbital, additionally cutting-edge pain solutions such as systemic lidocaine infusions. Hospice is much more interesting and pharmacologically involved than most nurses would think.
  • Hospice nurses are truly family, we see things and experience things together that build strength and belonging as a team, as nurses, as friends.
  • Ironically Hospice has more LIFE in it than any unit, ward or workplace I have ever worked at. I truly mean that.
  • We have the privilage of learning from some of the strongest and most profound individuals, no where else have I experienced so many people faced with hardships beyond our comprehension, and doing so with integrity and strength. This is truly a privileged learning position as a nurse and as a human being.
  • It is not only a change in nursing specialty, but a change in perspective, it is a positive and broadening experience that grows healthcare professionals like no other sector can.

We aren’t the end of the road for all our patients, many of our patients do walk in and walk back out again once we’ve given them the IPU experience.

To talk things through and ask any questions, please contact Zoe Fairbrother, Clinical Nurse Manager, at [email protected] or 027 208 3402 to discuss any aspects of the role.
