Job Description - Registered Nurse Health & Wellbeing Lead

Mō te tūranga | About the role

This is a rare chance to influence, showcase and lift health and wellbeing for our people on the Ōtaki to north of Levin - Te Pae o Tararua, Northern Alliance major project.

About the project:

Ōtaki to north of Levin project focuses on upgrading the transport link along State Highway 1 (SH1) between Ōtaki and North Levin to improve road safety, save lives, reduce congestion, enhance travel efficiency, and support regional economic growth. It is one of the Government’s Roads of National Significance and is being undertaken by two Alliances – the north (delivered by partners Fulton Hogan, HEB, WSP and Aurecon) and south (delivered by partners Downer, McConnell Dowell, Beca and Tonkin+Taylor).

This exciting new four-lane 24.8km highway project will dramatically improve safety and resilience, providing better access to walking and cycling facilities for those moving around or through the Horowhenua and Kāpiti districts.

As our Health & Wellbeing Lead, you will be a Senior Registered Nurse, leading, strategizing and delivering a whānau-centred health and wellbeing approach that puts people first. This is not a desk or clinic role.  You’ll be out where the work happens, building trust, connecting in with people’s thinking and implementing thoughtful, practical solutions, being a voice for people, and helping teams access the right support at the right time.

Ngā tino kawenga mahi | Key role responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver integrated health and wellbeing programmes that support the hauora of our construction whānau using frameworks such as Te Whare Tapa Whā and Whānau Ora.
  • Build trusted relationships from day 1 with workers, whānau, leaders, community services and project partners.
  • Provide expert health advice, health navigation and practical support to help remove barriers and improve outcomes for people and their whānau.
  • Influence leaders, managers and the wider project to lift health literacy, improve wellbeing, and shape a healthier site culture.
  • Stand tall and advocate for our people while balancing care, compliance, ethics and safe delivery in a high-stakes environment.
  • Maintain accurate records, protect privacy, and ensure confidentiality is always exercised for individuals and the project.
  • Collect, analyse and report insights that help influence better health outcomes across the project and, over time, the wider construction industry.
  • Work closely with the South Alliance Registered Nurse and JV Alliance leadership to drive meaningful, practical and lasting change.

Kei te kimi mātou i tētahi e whai ana i ēnei pūkenga | We’re looking for someone with

  • Current registration with the Nursing Council of NZ and a current Annual Practising Certificate.
  • At least 5+ years’ experience as an experienced Registered Nurse, ideally with exposure to workplace health, wellbeing, mental health, or community-based support.
  • Strong knowledge of the New Zealand health sector, relevant legislation, regulations and standards.
  • Proven experience building strong relationships and influencing leaders, teams and stakeholders.
  • A warm, credible and confident approach, with the ability to earn trust, advocate for people and have honest conversations when it counts.
  • Experience developing and delivering successful health and wellbeing initiatives, then using data and insight to improve them over time.
  • Cultural capability in Te Ao Māori, hauora frameworks, or a willingness to grow in this space is favourable.
  • Comfort working in a hands-on construction environment, starting from 6:30am, and following through on commitments.

You’ll need warmth, sound judgement, and the courage to influence.  You’ll be a voice that listens, offers options and ultimately helps shape better outcomes while always maintaining confidentiality, and making sure we deliver on our promises.  

The work starts early, out at the toolbox pre starts at 6.30am, where you will be there building trust and connections. This is serious work, but you’ll do it with a friendly team that backs good ideas and cares deeply about people.
