Job Description - Research Officer - Senior Research Officer

The Malaghan Institute of Medical Research is New Zealand’s leading independent biomedical research institute, with a focus on breakthrough discoveries in immunology and immunotherapy. We have over 150 staff committed to finding cures for diseases using the body’s own immune system. 



Our Tissue Immunity Team studies how the lungs respond to environmental and pathogenic microbes, and how these interactions influence susceptibility to respiratory infectious diseases and asthma. We are seeking a motivated and dedicated Research Officer (RO) or Senior Research Officer (SRO) to join the Tissue Immunity Team and contribute to our ongoing asthma research. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work in a collaborative and supportive research environment, with the scope to tailor responsibilities to the successful candidate’s experience. A more senior appointment is available for suitably experienced applicants.



The ideal candidate will be adaptable, demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, and communicate effectively within a collaborative team.



This is a full-time position, offered on an initial fixed-term contract of 24 months.



Tohu Mātauranga | Qualifications



  • Bachelor of Science with Honours or Master of Science in Immunology (or related field)



Ngā pūkenga | Experience and Skills:



  • Demonstrated expertise in immunology, cellular biology, molecular biology, or a related discipline.

  • A minimum of 2 years’ relevant laboratory experience is preferred for the RO position.

  • A minimum of 5 years’ relevant laboratory experience is required for the SRO position.

  • Experience working with mouse models is preferred.

  • Experience with molecular biology techniques (e.g. DNA/RNA extraction, PCR) is preferred.

  • Knowledge of and experience with spectral flow cytometry will be highly advantageous.

  • Plan, organise, and conduct research projects focused on asthma.

  • Independently develop, apply, and expand scientific expertise in immunology.

  • Contribute to the day-to-day management of the laboratory, including reagent ordering and inventory monitoring.

  • Maintain accurate records and report research progress both orally and in writing.

  • Assist with data analysis and the preparation of results for publication and presentation.
