Job Description - Rolling Stock Technician

Description

Auckland One Rail (AOR) operates Auckland’s passenger rail services and maintains stations, depots, and rollingstock. As Auckland’s rail network expands—especially with the upcoming City Rail Link (CRL)—we’re growing our team to support increased services and future demand.

We’re looking for skilled Rollingstock Technicians to join us at an exciting time of growth and transformation.

About the Role

As a Rollingstock Technician, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring our trains run safely, reliably, and efficiently across an expanding network. This is a hands-on, technical role where you’ll support both current operations and future readiness as we scale up services for CRL.

This role operates on a 4 days on, 4 days off roster, including night (graveyard) shifts, to support our 24/7 rail operations.

What You’ll Do

  • Conduct scheduled inspections and preventative maintenance on rollingstock
  • Perform mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic repairs
  • Diagnose and resolve faults using diagnostic tools and systems
  • Ensure all work meets safety standards and manufacturer specifications
  • Respond to operational incidents, including after-hours callouts
  • Contribute to reliability improvements as fleet demand increases

Requirements

Essential Skills Required:

  • Trade qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or related discipline)
  • Experience in heavy vehicle, rail, or industrial maintenance
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics
  • Commitment to safety and quality standards

Desirable Skills:

  • Previous rail industry experience
  • Knowledge of rail-specific systems and standards
  • Welding/fabrication skills

Benefits
  • Free Train Travel: Enjoy complimentary train travel on Auckland passenger trains.
  • Travel Discount: Nominate a person and up to 3 dependents for train travel discounts.
  • NZ Railways Trust Membership: Benefit from discounted holiday accommodation and medical perks.
