Job Description - Sales Development Manager

Our slick software combined with our awesome support team help businesses pay their people on time, accurately and in line with legislation. Which I’m sure you’d agree is important stuff. 



Lead outbound sales for our new People Management product. High-growth role. High-impact work.


At Smartly, we help over 20,000 Kiwi businesses simplify payroll – and now we’re making HR just as easy with our People Management platform.


We’re looking for a Sales Development Manager (Outbound) to take the lead on selling our next-gen HR solution to medium and larger businesses across New Zealand. This is a senior-level role that sits within our Direct Sales team and reports directly to the Head of Sales. You’ll drive strategic outbound sales, lead Account-Based Marketing (ABM) campaigns, and work closely with existing payroll customers to upsell Smartly People Management.



As our Outbound Sales Development Manager, you’ll:



  • Own the full outbound sales cycle from prospecting to closing.

  • Lead targeted outreach to high-value HR & business decision-makers

  • Upsell existing Smartly payroll clients to our People Management platform.

  • Collaborate with marketing on ABM plays and outbound campaigns.

  • Build out a sales team if successful.

  • Drive new business revenue and increase ARPU across key accounts

  • Provide market feedback to help shape product roadmap and go-to-market strategy

  • Be the go-to for all things outbound HR tech sales



What you will bring:



  • 5+ years of outbound sales or business development experience, or experience selling HR software, SaaS, or HCM solutions.



  • A strong track record in closing complex, high-value deals



  • Commercial smarts and confidence negotiating subscriptions and partnerships



  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills



  • A strategic mindset with the hustle to deliver results



  • A love for building pipeline and driving conversations that matter
