Job Description - Scientist - Clinical Virology

Te tūnga | The role 

We have a full-time permanent opportunity for a Scientist within the Clinical Virology Team within the Health Group, based at Wallaceville Science Centre, Upper Hutt.  

This role involves providing scientific and diagnostic testing through performing routine and non-routine laboratory analysis of clinical samples for diagnostic, surveillance, and research purposes. You will be responsible for testing using virology and serological techniques while adhering to standard operating procedures (SOPs).

We are seeking a candidate with demonstrated experience in handling a diverse range of complex tasks and the ability to work independently, as well as within the team. You should be skilled in planning, data collection, analysis, and reporting results. 

  • An appropriate science qualification at a tertiary level. 

  • Must have registration with the New Zealand Medical Sciences Council as a Medical Laboratory Scientist and a current annual practicing certificate.  

  • At least three years of experience in a human health laboratory, preferably in infectious diseases Molecular principles and practice. 

  • Experience In research and development is preferred. 

  • Ability and willingness to work in a physical containment level 3 (PC3) laboratory. 

  • The ability to handle clinical and surveillance samples appropriately  

  • The ability to handle chemicals appropriately and prepare reagents accurately  

  • A good understanding of safe laboratory practices and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)  

  • Accuracy with numeracy and mathematical calculations and understanding of statistical measurement  

  • Understanding of Quality Management Systems, including ISO 15189:2022  

  • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, Outlook)  

  • The ability to work independently and to plan own work schedule.  

  • Must have the right to work in New Zealand.
