Senior Lawyer - Insurance

At Suncorp New Zealand, our Legal team plays a critical role in helping the business navigate a rapidly evolving landscape of customer expectations, legislative and regulatory changes, as well as technological innovation. We're looking for an experienced Senior Lawyer to join our Insurance Legal team on a 12-month fixed-term contract, supporting the business through a period of internal secondment and leadership transition.

This is an opportunity to work across the breadth of the Suncorp New Zealand business, providing high-quality legal advice on BAU issues, complex and high-profile matters, while partnering with internal stakeholders across claims, underwriting, product, risk, technology, customer and distribution functions. 

What you'll be doing

As a Senior Lawyer, you'll provide trusted legal counsel across a diverse range of insurance matters, helping the business make informed commercially focused decisions and deliver better outcomes for customers.

You'll:

• Provide commercially focused legal advice across claims, policy response, dispute resolution and insurance-related matters.
• Partner with stakeholders across the business to deliver practical legal solutions that align with strategic objectives.
• Support product development, marketing initiatives, contractual arrangements and key business projects.
• Advise on regulatory developments, compliance requirements and emerging legal risks within the New Zealand insurance market.
• Simplify complex legal issues into clear and actionable advice for a broad range of audiences.
• Contribute to strategic projects and transformation initiatives across the Suncorp New Zealand business.
• Embrace technological developments and tools to increase efficiency within the team and across the business.

What you'll bring

We're looking for a commercially minded legal professional with insurance experience who enjoys partnering with the business, navigating complexity and influencing outcomes.

• Admission as a Solicitor or Barrister in New Zealand with a current practising certificate.
• 7+ years' legal experience in private practice and/or an in-house environment.
• Strong knowledge of insurance law and the New Zealand regulatory environment.
• Experience advising on claims, dispute resolution, litigation management and policy interpretation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
• A strategic mindset and strong commercial acumen.
• A collaborative approach, with the confidence to work autonomously while contributing to team success.
