Aroturuki Tamariki | Independent Children’s Monitor provides oversight of the oranga tamariki system. We check that organisations supporting and working with tamariki (children) and rangatahi (young people) in the oranga tamariki system are meeting their needs, delivering services effectively, and improving outcomes. We do this by listening to the experiences of those in the system and analysing data, to provide insights that will drive continuous improvement for tamariki and rangatahi – particularly tamariki and rangatahi Māori and tamariki and rangatahi with disabilities.

Our Monitors are the public face of Aroturuki Tamariki.  They work in teams, engaging with the community to understand and record the experience of whānau, tamariki and rangatahi, family, professionals, caregivers and others who work with those involved with care and protection and/or youth justice services. We record what we hear, code what we hear from communities we visit, and write reports to share back with those we engage with. We use this information to support local practice and inform our national public reports.

We are looking for people with: 

• a social work or equivalent qualification


• a deep understanding of child protection and youth justice practice, as well as understanding the social service sector


• bring a risk lens to support the mahi (work) we do


• facilitation skills  


• strong writing skills and the ability to draft reports and other professional documents 


• proven ability to build meaningful connections with a wide range of people and organisations 


• able to engage with tamariki and rangatahi and their whānau  


• knowledge, experience, capability and understanding of tikanga Māori

We are supportive of flexible working arrangements.

Starting salaries are negotiated based on relevant skills and experience and we expect to offer a starting salary of between $90,742 and $118,678 for this role.
