Senior Project Manager: Buildings / Vertical

Job Description - Senior Project Manager: Buildings / Vertical

About Frequency:

Frequency is a New Zealand-owned project advisory consultancy. We work alongside clients from day one, bringing practical delivery knowledge and experienced people into complex projects — often in live operational environments where judgement, coordination and relationships matter.

The Opportunity

We asked Dylan Workman, Partner and Buildings Service Line Lead, what he’s looking for in this role.

“Success in this role looks like someone who can step confidently into complex projects, build trusted client relationships, and take real ownership of delivery. We’re looking for a Senior Project Manager who brings strong vertical build experience, commercial awareness, and the ability to lead project teams well. They’ll be organised, proactive, and comfortable managing competing priorities, while also helping to mentor and develop junior team members. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to make a strong contribution to our Auckland Buildings team and keep growing their consulting career.”

You’ll join Frequency’s Auckland Buildings team, leading the delivery of a range of vertical build projects across design, procurement, contract management and delivery. This role is suited to someone with 8+ years’ New Zealand-based project management experience in a client-side or consultancy environment, who is ready to take ownership of complex projects, lead client engagement, and contribute more broadly to team and business success.

You’ll work closely with clients, consultants, contractors and internal teams to keep projects moving and outcomes on track. You’ll be trusted to manage day-to-day delivery, provide clear direction to project teams, and bring a strong commercial lens to project planning, reporting, budgeting and performance.

While this role does not include line management responsibilities, you’ll play an important part in supporting the growth of others by mentoring graduates and junior project managers, sharing knowledge, involving them in project work, and modelling strong project management practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of projects to fully satisfy client needs and expectations, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget.

  • Actively engage with clients, understanding their objectives and maintaining strong, trusted relationships.

  • Identify, manage, and mitigate project risks to ensure successful outcomes.

  • Provide clear direction and guidance to project teams; mentor and support team members where applicable.

  • Contribute to business development efforts, including client meetings, proposals, and tenders.

  • Support procurement processes and contract administration, including working with NZS3910 and/or NZS3916 contracts.

  • Bring strong commercial awareness to project financials, performance and decision-making.

  • Support procurement processes and contract administration, including working with NZS3910 and/or NZS3916 contracts.

  • Build strong working relationships with clients and project teams, while contributing to a positive team culture internally.

About You

  • 8+ years’ project management experience in New Zealand, ideally within a client-side or consultancy environment.

  • Proven track record working on vertical build or building-related projects.

  • Strong experience across design, procurement, and contract management phases.

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and emotional intelligence, able to adapt your style to suit different audiences.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.

  • Confidence supporting projects through design, procurement, contract management and delivery phases.

  • A practical, solutions-focused mindset and the ability to identify risks and issues early.

  • Working knowledge of NZ procurement processes and construction contracts such as NZS3910 or NZS3916.

  • A genuine appetite to learn, take feedback on board, and continue developing your career.

How we work (and how you’ll grow)

We’re office-first, because in-person collaboration accelerates learning, strengthens relationships, and helps us solve problems faster. You’ll generally work between our Auckland office and client or project sites, staying close to the work and the people who matter. Flexibility is supported where it makes sense.

We’re also intentional about development at Frequency. You’ll be supported through structured pathways that build both delivery capability and consulting confidence — with clear expectations at each stage and practical support to help you progress. That includes regular coaching and mentoring from senior leaders, and opportunities to take real ownership as you grow.

What you’ll get

  • Five weeks’ annual leave

  • 4.5% employer KiwiSaver contribution

  • Enhanced parental leave

  • Wellbeing benefit and access to EAP for you and your whānau

  • Learning and development support, including forums, training budgets and professional memberships

  • Regular team connection moments and events
