Job Description - Senior Te Ao MÄori Librarian

Te āheinga The opportunity

This is a vital new role in Puke Ariki Libraries to contribute to designing and developing services and programs that are responsive to the needs of the Māori community. We are looking for a librarian with an up-to-date knowledge of library services that are responsive to the needs to Māori and interest to engage the libraries with local iwi and hapū. You will engage with the Library and Public Programs and Learning team to advance the delivery of Te Ao Māori and Te Reo resources and programs. If you are interested to identify the needs and opportunities for library services to Māori and concerned to ensure library services connect Tangata Whenua, customers and colleagues to Mātauranga Māori and Te Ao Māori, we want to hear from you.

  • Reporting to the Lead, provide Mātauranga Māori and Te Ao Māori advice on services and programs, and guidance on Te Reo Māori learning and literacy and support to staff and customers across our Library Network as part of Puke Ariki’s partnership under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Pro-actively identify future needs and opportunities for library services to Māori and assist prioritisation of delivery of these services at Puke Ariki, including professional development and contributing to relevant projects.
  • Keep up to date with local and international developments in Information Services particularly relating to Mātauranga Māori and Te Ao Māori.
  • With the Pou Tikanga, advise on appropriate Tikanga for our library services, collections, spaces and programmes.
  • Provide support to the library team with regard to daily operational tasks and ensure excellent customer services for the Library including other floors and services when rostered.
  • Act as “senior in charge”, taking responsibility for staff and customers within the facility during rostered shifts, provide direction and ensure security and safety of the building.
  • A relevant qualification in Library and Information Management.
  • Experience working in libraries (preferably public libraries).
  • A working proficiency in Te Reo Māori, and experience in applying Matauranga Māori and Te Reo in a library context.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated people management and supervisory experience.
  • Acts as an effective team member, evidence of demonstrating collaborative work style and acknowledging the value of diversity.
  • Competency in library management systems, as relevant for Māori.
  • Proven experience in a wide range of digital technologies.
  • Full Drivers Licence preferred.
