About Us – Christchurch City Mission

The Christchurch City Mission (Te Whare Mīhana Ki Ōtautahi) helps anyone in need, no matter their situation. We work alongside people going through tough times—whether it’s due to job loss, housing issues, addiction, family difficulties, or financial stress.

We respond to both immediate crises and long-term challenges. Our services aim to build confidence, dignity, and skills so people can live independently and feel proud of themselves. We've seen lives change with our support and firmly believe everyone deserves compassion, support, and a second chance.

What This Role Is About

The Women’s Night Shelter Supervisor provides calm, steady leadership of Christchurch City Mission’s Women’s Night Shelter, ensuring the service is safe, well run, and consistently supportive for wāhine accessing overnight shelter.

This role oversees the shelter’s operation from evening intake through to morning discharge. You’ll set clear routines, support staff on shift, and ensure respectful, trauma‑informed practice across the night. While you won’t be on site for every hour, you hold overall responsibility for standards, safety, handovers, and follow‑up, working closely with the Community Support Manager and wider Community Support teams.

You’ll play a key role in creating a predictable, settled environment where women can feel safe, treated with dignity, and supported through the night.

This is a full-time role (40 hours per week), worked Monday to Friday. The usual working hours are 2:30pm to 10:30pm, with some flexibility required to attend case management meetings and priority activities that occur outside the standard shift times.

About You - What You Bring

We’re looking for a calm, reliable people leader who is comfortable working in a night‑time shelter environment and supporting both clients and staff through complex and sometimes challenging situations.

You will bring:

  • Experience working in a shelter, residential, or high‑needs community setting, ideally with exposure to night‑time operations

  • Confidence coordinating and supporting staff on shift, setting clear expectations and providing steady leadership

  • A calm, trauma‑informed approach when supporting people experiencing homelessness, trauma, addiction, or mental health challenges

  • Strong situational awareness and sound judgement, including the ability to de‑escalate incidents and respond appropriately to risk

  • Clear, respectful communication and the ability to maintain professional boundaries

  • Good organisation and follow‑through, with an understanding of health & safety, safeguarding, privacy, and safe practice in communal living environments

In return we can offer you a rewarding role within a fun and supportive team environment, where no two days will be the same!  We also offer a wellbeing allowance and a day off for your birthday, not to mention the personal satisfaction gained from working for an organisation that does such amazing work.

If you want to discuss the role further, please contact [email protected]

At the Christchurch City Mission, we support an environment where everyone feels welcome to be themselves. We embrace diversity and celebrate individual uniqueness, encouraging anyone wanting to work for the City Mission to apply for our vacant positions.  If you have any support or access requirements, we encourage you to advise us at the time of application to assist you through the recruitment process.

Note:  To be eligible to apply for this role you need to have a New Zealand or Australian Citizenship/Permanent Residency or a valid Work Visa.
