WHO WE ARE 

ECPAT Child Alert Trust (ECPAT NZ) is a wide-reaching for-purpose organisation with a small team committed to creating a world where children in Aotearoa are free from all forms of sexual exploitation. We work with relevant sectors, government agencies, and communities to prevent children and young people being sexually exploited. Our multifaceted approach includes research, specialist trainings, campaigning, national and international advocacy, legal submissions, interviews, and educational resources. 

ECPAT NZ’s values of centring the rights of children, being mindful of every individual’s dignity, and participating in and promoting fair and equitable relationships underpin our collaborative approach to ensuring the safety of every child in Aotearoa. 

 

ROLE PURPOSE 

The volunteer Board of Trustees are responsible for the governance of ECPAT NZ, which includes developing policies, financial and general accountability, and providing expertise, particularly in the areas of finance, advocacy, cultural responsiveness, marketing, research, and digital strategy. to support the organisation. 

ECPAT NZ is currently seeking three new Trustees, including those who are interested in taking up a Secretary or Treasurer position. 

 

TIME COMMITMENTS 

Approximately 4 hours per month. This includes: 

  • Attend and actively participate in at least 75% of monthly Board meetings, including up to two 2 kanohi-ki-te-kanohi (face to face) meetings per year – 3-5 hours held in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland. 

  • Support and advocate for ECPAT NZ, including by attending events every so often. 

  • Attend new Board member orientation and training. 

 

DUTIES 

As a Board member, you will: 

  • Understand, promote and advocate for the organisation’s mission and strategy 

  • Be familiar with the organisation’s programmes, policies, and operations 

  • Attend Board meetings and appropriate committee meetings 

  • Offer occasional operational support to the ECPAT NZ team in areas of expertise 

  • Review agenda and supporting documents prior to meetings 

  • Keep current on Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) issues and developments in the sociopolitical environment that ECPAT NZ operates 

  • Strictly adhere to conflict of interest policies 

  • Strictly adhere to confidentiality policies  

 

RESPONSIBILITES OF THE BOARD 

The ECPAT NZ Board is legally and ethically responsible for all activities of the organisation. 

To that end it: 

  1. Strategises how ECPAT NZ will carry out its mission through long and short-term planning
  2. Thinks deeply and asks searching and generative questions to make sure that ECPAT NZ is doing the right work, in the right way, for the right reasons to get the best impact for children.
  3. Plans and adopts an annual budget and provides fiscal oversight
  4. Recruits, orients, and develops Board members
  5. Hires, challenges, supports, monitors and evaluates the performance of the Director
  6. Evaluates ECPAT NZ’s performance in achieving its mission
  7. Establishes policies for the effective management of ECPAT NZ.
