E pa ana ki te Kāenga | About the Residence
Our Youth Justice Residences operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and are responsible for providing a safe, secure, and supportive environment where rangatahi in our care can access services and support if they are sentenced or awaiting an outcome from Court due to offending.
Whakatakapokai is the most recent of five Youth Justice Residences operating across Aotearoa and is particularly focused on achieving positive change through Māori world view (Te Ao Māori) practice
Our aspiration at Whakatakapokai is to provide an environment that focusses on delivery of tailored care plans that are culturally focused, therapeutic, and restorative. We want our rangatahi to build and maintain their connections with whānau, hapū, iwi; and develop the skills so they can make positive decisions that reduce the likelihood of reoffending.
Mō te tūnga | About the role
As a member of the Whakatakapokai Leadership Team, you will work to develop and embed the kaupapa of the residence within our frontline workforce.
It is important that you are motivated to engage in our way of being so a willingness to learn and apply Māori restorative approaches is essential. You will work within a collaborative and reflective workplace so need to be open minded and a team player who is committed to achieving Oranga Tamariki's vision, purpose, and values and achieve regulatory compliance in the operation of the accommodation units.
The Kaiārahi leads and inspires a team of Residential Youth Workers and Rangatahi Mentors to deliver quality youth justice services for rangatahi in our care.
The Kaiārahi will manage the operational team on the floor, providing risk mitigation advice and support, supporting shift planning and ensuring appropriate resources are in place so that each day is stimulating and purposeful to meet the individual needs of rangatahi.

Oranga Tamariki offer an impartial remuneration package, that offers progression annually for experience through tenure. Annual remuneration for this position starts between $106,416 to $117,782 depending on experience and is reflective of leadership qualities.
